⚜️ Scouts do amazing things ⚜️

A SCOUT’S TRAINING SAVED HIS LIFE ⚜️🚁

One of the greatest strengths of Scouting is that it prepares young people for real-life situations. The skills learned during Scout training are not just for camps or earning badges—they can one day save a life.

In July 2001, 13-year-old Boy Scout Cody Clawson became separated from his troop during a camping trip in Targhee National Forest, near Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA. Alone in the wilderness, he spent more than 18 hours battling cold weather, rain, and uncertainty.

Instead of panicking, Cody remembered what he had learned through Scouting. He stayed calm, found shelter, and waited for an opportunity to signal for help.

The next morning, he heard a search-and-rescue helicopter flying overhead. Thinking quickly, he used the metal buckle of his Scout belt to reflect sunlight toward the helicopter. The flashes caught the pilot’s attention, leading the helicopter directly to his location.

What made the rescue even more remarkable was that the helicopter was piloted by Harrison Ford, the renowned Hollywood actor famous for portraying Indiana Jones and Han Solo. Beyond his acting career, Ford is an experienced pilot who has volunteered in numerous search-and-rescue missions.

After landing safely, Harrison Ford reportedly smiled and said:
“Boy, you sure must have earned a merit badge for this one.”

With the confidence of a true Scout, Cody replied:
“I already earned this badge last summer.”

This incredible story reminds us that Scouting is not just an organization—it is a school of life. The values of preparedness, courage, self-reliance, and practical skills can make the difference between danger and survival.

Every knot tied, every camp attended, every survival lesson learned, and every Scout activity has a purpose. You may never know when those lessons will become the key to saving your own life or the life of someone else.

The Scout Motto says it all: “Be Prepared.” Those two words guided a young Scout through one of the most difficult moments of his life and brought him home safely.

What a fabulous adventure we took last week! The cubs and the scouts had a blast! The Great Lakes Museum is a museum dedicated to marine history in the Great Lakes. It is located at 55 Ontario St. in Kingston, Ontario, which is also a designated National Historic Site of Canada. Kingston Dry Dock.

This Titanic-era ship is now permanently docked at the Great Lakes Museum.

Built in 1907, the S.S. Keewatin is the last of her kind, and older than the Titanic. Step back in time and witness the splendor of steam passenger liner travel.

Each experience includes knowledgeable guides. Thank you for a wonderful experience!

Another great night teaching the youth how to read a variety of different maps.

Learning to read a paper map is a vital survival skill that ensures you never get stranded when technology fails. Unlike digital devices, paper maps never run out of battery, don't require an internet connection or cellular signal, and are immune to screen glare or hardware malfunctions. Beyond emergencies, mastering paper maps offers several major practical and cognitive benefits:
⚜️Unmatched Reliability: Phones can overheat, freeze, or suffer water damage in harsh weather. A physical road atlas or topographic map remains perfectly legible in extreme temperatures or heavy rain.
⚜️Big-Picture Perspective: GPS apps are great for turn-by-turn routing, but they give a "tunnel vision" view of your surroundings. A paper map lets you see the whole region at once, making it much easier to visualize geography, spot alternative routes, and understand the bigger picture.
⚜️Better Spatial Awareness: The physical act of holding, unfolding, and orienting a map helps your brain build a "cognitive map" of the area. This significantly boosts your natural sense of direction and memory retention compared to mindlessly following a robotic voice.
⚜️Enhanced Safety: If you are travelling off the grid or in the backcountry (like hiking or canoeing in nearby wilderness areas near Kingston areas ), paper maps are essential. They empower you to explore safely without the fear of losing reception.

We are community partners with the Bath and Amherstview Lions. The Lions have been our community sponsor for years. We are grateful for this partnership with them. We have been able to finance many adventures from their very generous donations and sponsorship over the years. Please join us on Sunday for a Lions function event to support the community. Mike Mundell’s fish fry. Fish fry is Sunday 5-7pm at the community hall.
