What an incredible community we live in!

Thanks to your generosity, the 2026 Rewind 89.3/ Gates Insurance Food Drive raised an amazing $17,139.10 in cash, PLUS a tremendous amount of non-perishable food to support 10 Valley food banks!

A huge thank you to Rewind 89.3 Aviva, Sobeys, the Rotary Club of New Minas Sunrise, District 7815, Greenwich Fire Department, Chicken Farmers of Nova Scotia, Chicken Farmers of Nova Scotia our Gates Insurance team, and all the incredible volunteers who helped make this year’s food drive such a success!

To every individual, family and local business that donated, THANK YOU! Every dollar and every item of food will help make a difference for our neighbours who need it most.

It takes a community to make a difference, and the Annapolis Valley showed up in a BIG way! 💚

18 calls worth making this year, and what to say when they answer.

Almost nobody makes these. Almost everybody could.

1) Car insurance. "What discounts am I not getting?"
2) Home or renters insurance. Same question, then ask what bundling would do.
3) Your cell carrier. "I am looking at other plans. What can you do for me?"
4) Internet provider. Ask for the promotional rate by name. Mention the competitor.
5) Credit card issuer. "Can you lower my APR?" This works far more often than people expect.
6) Credit card issuer, second call. "Can you waive the annual fee?"
7) Any medical bill over $200. "Can I get an itemized bill, and is there a cash-pay discount?"
8) The hospital billing office. Ask about financial assistance. Non-profit hospitals are required to have a policy and almost never mention it.
9) Your bank. "Can you refund this fee?" First time is usually yes.
10) Your pharmacy. "What is the cash price without insurance?" Sometimes it is lower.
11) Your mortgage servicer. "Can I drop PMI?" Once you are at 20% equity, ask.
12) Your county assessor. Ask how to appeal the assessment. There is a window and it is short.
13) HR. "Am I getting the full match?"
14) HR, second call. "What benefits do people here not use?" The answer is usually expensive.
15) Your last employer's 401(k) plan. Find it. Roll it.
16) Your investment provider. "What am I paying in fees, all in?" Make them say the number.
17) Any subscription you have used twice this year. Cancel it. They will counter-offer.
18) An estate attorney, one hour, once. Make sure the will and the beneficiary forms agree. They often do not.

Call number 12 has the shortest deadline and the biggest payoff. Most people have never once appealed a property assessment.

Save this and make one call a week. You will finish before Christmas.
