The UCC thanks Minister Anita Anand and the Government of Canada for the $8 million contribution to help repair the Chornobyl New Safe Confinement. Russia, a terrorist state that must be isolated from the international community, attacked the structure with drones. On April 26, the world marked the 40th anniversary of the Chornobyl nuclear disaster. May the Memory of the Victims Be Eternal. Вічная Пам’ять.

Gardens are in bloom in Canada and Ukraine - this is something we share in common. In fact, there is much that binds Canada to Ukraine. We are grateful for everyone who remembers and acts to support peace, justice and healing in Ukraine.

🇺🇦 Ukrainians abroad: contributing, not consuming

New data from Europe continues to challenge a common misconception: displaced Ukrainians are not primarily dependent on aid—they are active contributors to the economies and communities that have welcomed them.
📊 Recent analysis shows:
• Only 16.6% rely primarily on social assistance
• Nearly 50% are employed or running businesses
• Another 6.6% receive income from Ukraine (pensions, stipends, etc.)

In countries like Poland, the impact is already macroeconomic—Ukrainians contributed an estimated 2.7% to GDP in 2024, driving labour force growth, consumption, and entrepreneurship.

In Germany, integration is more gradual but steady, with strong participation in language training and rising employment—laying the foundation for long-term economic contribution.

And in Estonia, farmers are raising a different concern:
If Ukrainian workers return home, the agriculture sector could face a serious labour shortage. Their contribution has become essential to food production.

🇨🇦 What about Canada?
Here in Canada, many Ukrainians who arrived under CUAET are following a similar path:
• Entering the workforce quickly
• Filling critical labour gaps (including health care, construction, and service sectors)
• Starting small businesses
• Supporting local economies through housing, education, and consumption
This is not short-term dependency. It is community building and economic participation.

At Okanagan 4 Ukraine, we see this every day—skilled, motivated individuals working hard to rebuild their lives while strengthening the communities around them.

📌 As conversations continue about immigration, labour, and public policy, the evidence is clear:
Supporting displaced Ukrainians is not only humanitarian—it delivers measurable public benefit.

Canada extends certain work permit measures for Ukrainians
From: Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada

As Russia’s illegal war against Ukraine persists, Canada continues to support Ukrainian people who are here contributing to our communities and labour market.

Today, the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced that Ukrainians who arrived in Canada under the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET) and related measures will have an additional year to apply to extend their work permit.

To be eligible, Ukrainians and their family members must have arrived in Canada on or before March 31, 2024. CUAET holders who didn’t receive a decision in time to arrive by March 31, 2024, but who were allowed to arrive by December 31, 2024, are also eligible for these measures. People who were issued work permits under CUAET and related measures now have until March 31, 2027, to apply to extend their work permit for up to three years.

These measures, like the CUAET, are temporary. They will allow Ukrainians and their family members to continue to work, while recognizing that many will eventually return home to contribute to Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction.

I'm guessing many who follows us has sung along/ danced to the famous Proclaimer's classic U24 has adapted. So much creativity in the face of Good Friday marking the 1500th day of war! Determination and wit . . . a powerful force!

But we would walk 500 days
And we would walk 500 more
Just to be the guys who walk a thousand days
To kick the russians out of the door
