I’m very sad to report that my Terry Fox Ride of Hope for the The Terry Fox Foundation has been delayed. Instead of spending the day cycling towards the ultimate destination at the Terry Fox monument in St John’s, NL, I spent the day at the hospital. Last night I fell down some steps at Jeanne and Brandt’s home and badly injured my foot. Brandt and I spent a few hours in emergency last night but the x-rays were inconclusive. Today we went back to the hospital for a CT scan and more evaluation. I have a Lisfranc injury to my right foot and will need to make sure I am not applying weight to the foot for a while.

Unfortunately, my trip across Canada is over for now. I’m pretty sure there won’t be time to complete it this season but I will finish. Hopefully next summer will be better.

I want to thank everyone who has supported me and the Terry Fox Foundation. The people I’ve met along the way have been amazing and the support of my family and friends has really touched my heart.

I will be back and I will finish this ride.

Day 9 of my Terry Fox Ride of Hope, cycling across Canada for The Terry Fox Foundation. Today was Christina Lake to Castlegar, 95km all on the Columbia Western Rail Trail.

I saw so many people on ATVs, 4x4s, motorcycles and bicycles, and I had many good conversations. It’s so good to know that our rail trails are being used by so many people.

I met Allan and Ivan in their 4x4 as they were glassing for mountain goats. They had a chainsaw in the back and do their part to keep the rail trail open. I was also told of someone who grades it as well.

There are numerous trestles and tunnels on the C&W, including the Bulldog Tunnel. It’s almost a kilometre long and bends in the middle making it pitch black in there. I did it before with a light on the bike but it really wasn’t much and it was unnerving. This time two ATVs were entering at the same time so they had me ride between them. It was much better! I had hoped to get a picture with them after we went through but they didn’t stop.

I had to cross a creek today and it was a bit treacherous. While pushing the bike, I stepped on a rock that wobbled and my bike fell over…on the derailleur! So, in Castlegar I stopped at Cycology Bikes and the guys there got me shifting well again. I sure hope that’s the last time that happens!

While in the shop, my friend Helen, from Castlegar, came in to see me! I met her at the Summertime Bluegrass Festival last weekend where I presented her with the guitar from our raffle. She promised she’d say hello when I arrived and sure enough she did!

Tonight I’m staying with Jeanne and Brandt at their absolutely lovely home. My laundry is done, I’ve had a shower, I’ve been fed an amazing salmon dinner and they have porridge planned for the morning. It’s been a bit of heaven.

Day 8 of my Terry Fox Ride of Hope, cycling across Canada for the The Terry Fox Foundation. Today was Rock Creek to Christina Lake, 105km starting on the Kettle Valley Rail Trail and then in Midway changing to the Columbia Western Rail Trail. Big shoutout to my friends John and Joan in Midway for feeding me a big breakfast and helping me to find the leak in my air mattress.

I was lucky to meet up with Simon Lanoix. He’s walking across Canada. I’ve read about him so I felt like I was meeting a celebrity.

I spent a couple hours in Grand Forks. What a nice town! I had bent my derailleur hanger when my bike fell over so I stopped by Seasons Cycle and the did an excellent job fixing it for me. It’s now shifting like new again. I also had an amazing lunch at The Wooden Spoon Bistro. I highly recommend The Big Cat sandwich.

I’m actually not in Christina Lake tonight. I’m camping right beside the KVR above the town. When I found a nice mountain stream with a flat spot for my tent I found home for the night. I’m happy that I don’t have to go down the mountain into town and then back up again tomorrow morning.

The scenery was breathtaking with rivers, meadows, farms, mountains, waterfalls, tunnels, and trestles. I also met lots of really nice people again today. What a wonderful country we live in! 🇨🇦

Day 7 of my Terry Fox Ride of Hope, cycling across Canada for the The Terry Fox Foundation. Today was Kelowna to Kettle River Provincial Park, 127km all on the Kettle Valley Rail Trail. Cindy drove me up to the KVR where I left it at the end of May. She amazing, supporting me on this crazy adventure. Del road his bike to our place and came up to the KVR with us. I was pleasantly surprised that Nick, Franky, Scott and Steve joined me for the first stretch to Hydraulic Lake. I met up with my buddy Ross at Arlington Lakes. I was so touched that my son Will and Eva brought my granddaughters up to the KVR to send me off and my son Lou met me on the trail near his house. Ivan came by last night to say goodbye. Luckily I saw Arwen and Alyssa this morning as they were heading out on their road trip to see the dinosaur bones. I’m really going to miss my family! What a great day with perfect weather and lots of nice people along the way. There were lots of cyclists. A really nice lady in Beaverdell made me a delicious burger for lunch. Another nice gentleman there made a $20 donation. Mike Snedden
