Too many children with disabilities are still being excluded from child care in BC because of waitlists, lack of staffing, inaccessible spaces, or unmet support needs. An inclusive child care system means removing barriers, not asking families to carry the burden alone.

Today marks the start of National Accessibility Week (NAAW). This week celebrates the leadership, achievements, and contributions of people with disabilities across Canada.

This year's theme is "Building a Strong, Accessible Canada."

It invites all of us to take action to advance a barrier-free country. Significant progress has been made to eliminate and prevent barriers, and by continuing to work together, we can build a truly accessible, inclusive and equitable Canada.

Our country is stronger when persons with disabilities can participate fully in all aspects of society.

Together, we can empower each other and make a meaningful impact.

The Government of Canada is working toward a barrier-free country by 2040 with its Disability Inclusion Action Plan, focused on social and economic inclusion, poverty reduction, and easier access to federal services. Meanwhile, BC is making strides through AccessAbility Week, funding community projects, and forming a diverse Provincial Accessibility Committee to help shape accessibility standards in key areas like employment and education. Together, these efforts aim to foster a culture of inclusion and remove barriers for persons with disabilities. ♿🇨🇦

Speak Up Self-Advocacy Awareness - SUSA Society hosted An Amazing Race to Inclusion yesterday.

Our club entered 2 teams to participate in the event. Although we are aware of accessibility issues within Kamloops, it showed us how others with diverse abilities face challenges each and every day.

In addition, there were 3 vision challenges where participatants had to find a specific item in a store while having no sight. We had volunteers from our club assist in these challenges. Thank you to those volunteers. We appreciate SUSA allowing our club to participate in this event.

A big thank you to SUSA for continuing to bring awareness to our community of the challenges that people with diverse abilities face every day.
