New here? Welcome! Been here awhile? Welcome back! Either way, we figured it was time to reintroduce ourselves.

Shark Research Foundation is a non-forprofit that aims to to increase scientific knowledge, improve public perceptions, and promote the conservation of sharks through research and education.

If you haven't, go check out our website where you can find open access research publications and stay up to date with live shark tracking! You can also support us through donations as we rely on grants, philanthropic donations, corporate sponsorships and in-kind contributions.

From the Pacific and across the Atlantic we are tracking many species of sharks! Have you checked out our marinebiotrack project? You can live track right from our website!

What is it?

A marine tracking network that uses electronic tags to identify biodiversity hotspots along the U.S. East Coast, aiming to expand further. It combines tracking data and environmental models to guide conservation and sustainable ocean use. We can’t make smart decisions to protect wildlife if we don’t have smart data for it!

How much do we really know about where sharks go? 🦈🌎

This research was lead by emy.cottrant with sharkconservancy and shows that even species that seem well understood can still surprise us. If we don’t fully understand where sharks go…we can’t fully protect them.

Spotted gully sharks were tracked along the Western Cape coastline to better understand how they move and where they spend time. Data suggests their movements are more complex than previously thought!

Think of sharks as ecosystem engineers 🦈

They don’t just live in the ocean—they help build its balance and biodiversity in ways most people never see:

• Ecology of fear
Just their presence changes behavior. Fish hide or move, giving seagrass and coral a chance to recover instead of being constantly grazed.

• Trophic cascade
Remove sharks and the system shifts—predators explode, grazers disappear, algae takes over, and reefs begin to collapse.

• Nature’s quality control
Sharks often target sick or injured prey, helping limit disease spread and keeping populations genetically stronger over time.

Protecting sharks isn’t just about one species—it’s about protecting the entire system beneath the surface.

🚨New research just dropped‼️

Sharks aren’t just chasing warmer water—they may be rewriting their genetic future!

Led by Shannon Barry from the Daly-Engel Shark Conservation Lab, we are proud to be a part of the research paper.
