The Great Challenge 2025 fundraising campaign has finally come to an end— and what an incredible journey it has been! Thanks to all of you who donated to this worthy cause. We truly appreciate your generous monetary donations. A special thank you also goes to all the businesses that offered deals on purchases, services, equipment, and tools. It was truly beautiful to experience the support you all provided. It is during these types of events that we see how people come together and show their generosity.
We completed the trip in 28 days, facing all sorts of challenges along the way. Overcoming these obstacles made the trip special and unforgettable. I often think about my father’s trip in 1985 and compare our expeditions, which differed in many ways: time of year, snow conditions, slush, technological advancements (especially in communication), and equipment. Yet, one thing remained the same: the walk – the pilgrimage. I feel honored to have walked in his footsteps and undertaken this expedition for the prosperity of Camp Source de Vie. I want to thank my expedition partner, Patrice Beauparlant, who made this journey possible. Working together as friends and partners enriched the entire experience.
In total, we received over 275 donations, totaling $61,000! What an incredible achievement!

La campagne de collecte de fonds Le Grand Défi 2025 est enfin terminée — et quel voyage incroyable ce fut ! Un immense merci à tous ceux qui ont contribué à cette noble cause. Nous apprécions sincèrement vos généreuses contributions financières. Un grand merci également à toutes les entreprises qui ont offert des rabais sur les achats, les services, l'équipement et les outils. Ce fut véritablement inspirant de constater tout le soutien que vous nous avez apporté. C'est lors de ce type d'événements que l'on voit comment les gens se rassemblent et font preuve de générosité.
Nous avons complété le voyage en 28 jours, surmontant de nombreux défis en chemin. Ces obstacles ont rendu le voyage unique et inoubliable. Je pense souvent à l’expédition de mon père en 1985 et je compare nos aventure, qui différaient à bien des égards : période de l'année, condition de la neige, slush, avancées technologiques (surtout en matière de communication) et équipement. Mais une chose est restée la même : la marche – le pèlerinage. Je me sens honoré d'avoir marché dans ses traces et d'avoir entrepris cette expédition pour la prospérité du Camp Source de Vie. Je tiens à exprimer des remerciements à mon partenaire d'expédition, Patrice Beauparlant, qui a rendu ce voyage possible. Travailler ensemble en tant qu'amis et partenaires a enrichi toute l'expérience.
Au total, nous avons reçu plus de 275 dons, pour un montant de $61,000 ! Quel accomplissement incroyable !

The two friends cross-country skied, snowshoed and walked from Fort Albany on the James Bay Coast all the way back to their hometown of Hearst Ontario. They did this to raise money for the youth camp Camp Source De Vie. They will share their experiences of the trip, both good and bad and how they are passing this along to the students.

Cela fait déjà un mois depuis notre arrivée à Hearst. Nous sommes retournés à la routine quotidienne de la vie en civilisation, et des choses comme le thermostat et l'eau courante sont de nouveau pris pour acquis. C'est en regardant les photos que nous nous souvenons de notre aventure. Autant nous étions soulagés d'arriver et d’en avoir fini à endurer le froid, autant nous avons vécu de merveilleux moments. Pour ce post, voici en images nos meilleurs et nos pires moments.

It has already been a month since our arrival in Hearst. We’ve returned to the daily routine of life in civilization, and things like the thermostat and running water are once again taken for granted. It’s by looking at the photos that we remember our adventure. As relieved as we were to arrive and be done with enduring the cold, we also experienced wonderful moments. For this post, here are the images of our best and worst moments.

Pour notre expédition, nous avons eu la chance d'avoir une toute nouvelle tente Snowtrekker Tents. Les propriétaires, Duane et Margot, ont été inspirés par notre histoire d'expédition et nous ont généreusement soutenus en nous prêtant une nouvelle tente Snowtrekker 9.5x9.5 High Country Hybrid.

Personnellement, je possède une tente Snowtrekker 9x11.5 Shortwall depuis 2018 et je l'adore. J'y ai passé des centaines de nuits, à travers toutes les saisons, dans diverses conditions météorologiques, et elle s'est avérée être fiable, durable et facile à installer.

Pour ce voyage, j'ai choisi d'utiliser le modèle Hybrid plutôt que mon modèle personnel Shortwall pour trois raisons principales : premièrement, cela nous a permis de réduire le poids de 7 livres ; deuxièmement, les murs de côtés plus hauts ont offert plus d'espace intérieur ; et troisièmement, la sortie du tuyau de poêle était plus centrée, offrant ainsi plus d'espace pour sécher notre équipement autour du poêle à bois. De plus, avec le tuyau du poêle allant droit vers le haut, nous n'avions pas besoin de monter un trépied chaque nuit, ce qui nous a permis de gagner du temps. Le modèle Hybrid est également 2 pieds plus court en longueur que le Shortwall, réduisant ainsi l'espace à chauffer.

Les tentes Snowtrekker sont la référence en matière de camping hivernal.

For our expedition, we were fortunate to have a brand-new tent from Snowtrekker Tents. The owners, Duane and Margot, were inspired by our expedition story and generously supported us by lending a new 9.5x9.5 High Country Hybrid Snowtrekker tent.

I’ve personally owned a 9x11.5 Shortwall Snowtrekker tent since 2018, and I absolutely love it. I’ve spent hundreds of nights in it across all four seasons, in various weather conditions, and it has proven to be reliable, durable, and easy to set up.

For this trip, I chose to use the Hybrid model instead of the my personal Shortwall model for three key reasons: first, it saved us 7 pounds; second, the higher sidewalls provided more interior space; and third, the stove jack was more centrally located, allowing more room to dry gear around the wood stove. Additionally, with the pipe going straight up from the stove, we didn’t need to set up a tripod every night, which saved us time in our busy schedule. The Hybrid model is also 2 feet shorter in length than the Shortwall, reducing the area we needed to heat.

Snowtrekker tents are the gold standard of winter camping.

Pendant l'expédition, pour les soupers et quelques déjeuners, nous avons mangé des repas lyophilisés et déshydratés. À part quelques spaghetti, chili et soupe déshydratée que nous avons faits nous-mêmes à la maison, tous nos soupers étaient des repas lyophilisés de la marque Peak Refuel.

Nous avons fait nos achats chez Typer's Bait & Tackle. Un énorme merci à Crystel pour la super deal! Tu as été généreuse et nous l'apprécions beaucoup! Pour les amateurs de plein air, je vous recommande la marque Peak Refuel. Pat et moi avons été impressionnés par les différents choix de repas et leur valeur nutritive.

During the expedition, for dinners and a few breakfasts, we ate freeze-dried and dehydrated meals. Aside from a few dehydrated spaghetti, chili, and soup that we made ourselves at home, all our dinners were freeze-dried meals from the brand Peak Refuel.

We did our shopping at Typer's Bait & Tackle. A huge thank you to Crystel for the great deal! You were very generous, and we really appreciate it! For outdoor enthusiasts, I highly recommend the Peak Refuel brand. Pat and I were impressed by the different choice of meals and their nutritional value.
