Bruyere Health in Ottawa is laying off 46 personal care attendants and 9 nurses.
Dedicated, compassionate care workers are losing their jobs for no reason other than the provincial government's reluctance to fund hospitals properly.
Remember, Ontario has the lowest per person funding in Canada. And now the Ford government is reducing funding even more.
If you listen to the experts i.e. the frontline workers, there is no logical justification for these staffing cuts. In a recent survey, 67 per cent of CUPE workers said they work through their scheduled breaks due to understaffing.
Douglas Currier, the CUPE 4540 president and a registered practical nurse, has been at Bruyere for over 30 years. He says he was shocked to hear that people were being laid off when the hospital clearly needed more staff.
“It’s mind-boggling to hear about frontline job cuts at our hospital when care is already at breaking point," he said.
The PCAs - equivalent to PSWs - have an important role. They help with bathing and toileting patients while also aiding nurses in providing medical care.
“The current PCA staffing levels are not good enough to meet patients’ needs in a timely manner," according to Douglas.
"What happens after these cuts, who is going to make sure patients are toileted and bathed on time? How about safety during code blues and code whites, when nurses are mobilized off the unit – who looks after patients at risk of falling?”
Douglas finds this all extremely troubling, as the shortfall in care affects not just the workers but the entire community, which relies on this hospital.
“We are witnessing the gradual demise of a beloved community hospital, and I find that heartbreaking,” he says.
