New Book - The Oak Ridges Moraine Aquifer System, Canada: Data-driven Collaborative Science for Public Purpose by R. Ge**er, D. Sharpe, S. Holysh, M. Marchildon, M. Doughty, S. Frape, L. Labelle, B. Smith, S. Shikaze. To download visit: https://lnkd.in/gBRtJbN To donate: https://lnkd.in/de9ShmQ

The book highlights an extraordinary collaborative achievement in groundwater management centered on the Oak Ridges Moraine Aquifer. It describes how all levels of government in the Greater Toronto Area created the Oak Ridges Moraine Groundwater Program (ORMGP) to collect, manage, and safeguard subsurface data as a public resource. The program developed advanced online tools that allow users to access, visualize, and analyze groundwater information, and it partnered with the Geological Survey of Canada to build a sophisticated geologic and hydrogeologic framework. Its system also serves as a powerful educational platform, supporting learning from elementary classrooms to graduate‑level hydrogeology. Overall, the book showcases how visionary leadership and long‑term cooperation produced a world‑class groundwater data repository that strengthens science, planning, and water management for future generations.

🌍 Più conoscenza sulle acque sotterranee, insieme alla comunità italiana

Thanks to the dedication of our volunteer translators, The Groundwater Project is expanding access to groundwater education for the Italian community with warmth, collaboration, and shared purpose.

We’re proud to share that 7 books have already been translated into Italian, with 4 books currently in progress. Every translation helps bring trusted groundwater knowledge closer to students, professionals, and readers across Italy.

There’s still important work ahead. We’re now looking for volunteers to help translate the remaining 58 books and broaden access to this knowledge for even more Italian readers.

If you’re interested in groundwater, education, or scientific translation and would like to contribute to an international educational initiative with impact in Italy, we’d love to hear from you.

We had the privilege of interviewing the brilliant minds at KGS Group founding partner Bert Smith, Jason Mann, and Bonnie Hoffensetz, about their incredible work protecting groundwater during the 50km Winnipeg Floodway Expansion.

Beyond their groundbreaking engineering, KGS Group explained why they are proud founding sponsors of the Groundwater Project and active supporters of Lifewater Canada, helping to bring clean drinking water to communities in Africa and Haiti.

For KGS Group, hydrogeology is more than a business, it's about:
1️⃣ Honoring the legacy of great mentors (like Dr. John Cherry!)
2️⃣ Empowering the next generation of engineers with free, high-quality textbooks in 60+ languages.
3️⃣ Stepping out of the books, putting on the field boots, and finding real-world, sustainable solutions.

Curious to know how they used "reverse sand filters" to clean floodwater? Or why they chose to widen a channel instead of deepening it to protect a regional aquifer?

Did you know that The Groundwater Project has a whole area dedicated to learning tools and modules? Over the past year, the GW-Project has continued to expand its commitment to high-quality, accessible education by developing online interactive education for groundwater science.

The Groundwater Project’s Interactive Tools and Modules are designed to bring key concepts to life. Tools focus on teaching one concept while modules integrate interactive learning tools with self-assessments, instructional videos, and field datasets, offering comprehensive guidance to users and a rigorous understanding of a topic.

Whether you’re teaching, studying, or expanding your expertise in groundwater flow and transport, our Interactive Education section offers a hands-on way to discover, visualize, and better understand essential hydrogeology topics.

We’re constantly developing new tools and modules to make learning more interactive and visual. These resources are designed to be engaging, accessible, and easy to use.

Today, we are proud to spotlight Midwest GeoSciences Group, a Gold Sponsor of the Groundwater Project.

Midwest GeoSciences Group serves groundwater professionals with training courses, workshops, webinars, online educational experiences, and field tools.

Co-founders, Dan Kelleher and Tim Kemmis, quickly learned that professionals benefited from their courses because they provide meaningful solutions to common technical problems. They listened and learned from participants and today they collaborate with experts who teach a spectrum of topics related to the environmental and engineering industry. Plus, they developed field tools to help field staff think on their feet as the drilling and sampling program progresses.

Field tools include:
FIELD GUIDE FOR SOIL AND STRATIGRAPHIC ANALYSIS
FIELD GUIDE FOR ROCK CORE LOGGING AND FRACTURE ANALYSIS
FIELD GUIDE FOR SLUG TESTING AND DATA ANALYSIS
USDA SOIL TEXTURING FIELD FLOW CHART
GLACIAL SEDIMENTS POSTER CHART
SOIL CLASSIFICATION EXAM KIT
USCS CALIBRATED BASELINE SOIL KIT
USDA CALIBRATED SOIL KIT
SOLID H(o) SLUGS
PNEUMATIC Hi-K SLUG ASSEMBLY
And some fun stuff too.

Midwest GeoSciences Group courses and webinars are designed as purely educational and non-commercialized. They are motivated by serving professionals with hope that our collaborative efforts help all of us become successful professionals who strive to always improve our hydrogeologic talents while achieving effective global stewardship.

What does it take to turn a groundwater mystery into a powerful learning opportunity?

At The Groundwater Project, we are proud to spotlight author Doug Mackay, whose work helps make high-quality hydrogeology knowledge freely accessible to readers around the world.

Douglas M. Mackay, Adjunct Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Davis, has made lasting contributions to contaminant hydrogeology and to The Groundwater Project. Since 2020, he has authored three books for our platform and contributed a preserved 1992 publication. His latest book explores the release and fate of MTBE at a site through a fascinating investigation of a “mystery contaminant.” The case study follows how the contaminant was identified and how its release history was reconstructed in a multi-aquifer system, offering practical insight for students, researchers, and professionals alike.

Read the full blog post on our website to learn more about Doug Mackay’s background, research, and contributions to The Groundwater Project: gw-project.org/blog

Thank you, Doug Mackay, for helping advance groundwater knowledge and for sharing your expertise with our global community.

We invite you to explore Doug’s books and discover new perspectives on contaminant hydrogeology through The Groundwater Projects publications.
