Boi-1da: The Beats Beyond the Mask

2025
36 x 36
Acrylic on Canvas

Commissioned by Advance Music Canada and Timberland in honor of music producer Boi-1da as he received the The JUNO Awards 2025 International Achievement Award.
The concept is derived from the influence of Boi-1da’s name, Robin the Boy Wonder, and merges the iconic music producer with the iconic superhero. The composition is based on a comic book panel from a vintage issue of World's Finest Comics #153 (c.1965). The panel itself has become a well-known image in pop culture, frequently used and recognized in the form of meme art.
While the original comic book panel showed Robin’s legendary partner Batman slapping Robin during an argument, this piece remixes the visuals by reversing the roles. However, instead of conflict, the tone of the piece is now one reflecting a mood of upliftment as Boi-1da hits Batman with a symphony of beats, symbolized through the record that Boi-1da is holding. In doing so, the Dark Knight, usually stoic in demeanor, breaks into a big grin as he is sent into musical ecstasy by the audio waves moving through him.
Boi-1da: The Beats Beyond the Mask is meant to convey the influence of Boi-1da’s work in the music industry and its long-lasting cultural effects across the world.
The colors of Boi-1da’s superhero attire not only match those of Robin’s original costume, but are also representative of the Jamaican flag, a nod to Samuels’ Caribbean roots. Also fitting is the red colored background which is the color of the original comic book panel background, while also representing and symbolizing Boi-1da’s Canadian ties.

ADVANCE is thrilled to partner with the Black Screen Office in launching a new tool to help organizations tackle anti-Black racism and move toward equity. Our new Anti-Black Racism Policy Framework helps decision-makers create their own policies and do their part to build a system that is fair.

Canada’s cultural sector is at a turning point. Efforts toward equity globally are stalling. Yet, Black Canadians are still falling behind in our cultural sector: they hold just 2% of board seats despite making up 4.3% of the population. In music, 98% of them have never even applied for grants. In the screen sector: fewer than 3% occupy top creative roles.

Canadians want to do their part in tackling anti-Black racism. But momentum has too often been mistaken for progress. Without policy, real change remains optional and temporary.

This is changing today. Major organizations are taking the lead and are already using the framework to create their own policies. This includes the National Screen Institute, Canada’s National Ballet School and the National Film Board of Canada.
It’s time to take the next steps toward true equity so Black Canadians are not left out of our national story. Reach out to your organization and ask them to build their own policy to tackle anti-Black racism. No one is expected to get it perfect, but we are all expected to get moving. And if you’re not sure where to start, we are here to help.
