🌟 Meet Derek Hughes 🌟

We’re excited to introduce you to Derek— President of CIMarE, a dedicated community member, marine advocate, and lifelong learner.

🔹 What does Derek do?
He’s semi-retired and currently consulting with National Defence on Canada’s new submarine program.

🔹 What are his hobbies?
Derek enjoys carpentry, volunteering with rural committees, and spending time in the garden growing vegetables.

🔹 Dream travel destination?
A year-long cruise! He’s especially looking forward to an Alaskan cruise in 2026—exploring the world and making unforgettable memories.

🔹 Fun fact:
Derek is a bit OCD—very particular about some things, but not everything! He’s passionate about trust, teamwork, and learning from mistakes. Family bonds mean the world to him.

🔹 Favourite season?
Fall—no bugs, no snow, and perfect weather for outdoor projects.

🔹 Favourite books/movies?
The Harry Potter series and the Dune movies.

🔹 Weekend vibes?
A glass of red wine, cheese and crackers, and country music in the background.

🔹 Always learning:
Derek believes in continuous learning and professional development (CIMARE, PEO, PMI). Living in a rural area has taught him the value of self-sufficiency.

🔹 Pets?
No pets, but his yard is full of wildlife—deer, fawns, rabbits, hummingbirds, and even the occasional seal!

🔹 Dream dinner guest?
Tom Cruise—for his professionalism and dedication, which Derek truly admires.

🔹 Favourite meal?
Liver and onions! But seafood chowder and coconut cream pie are close seconds. He loves discovering family-run restaurants while traveling.

Derek is passionate about the marine community and believes in the power of volunteering. He encourages everyone to get involved—because strong communities are built by those who step up. He hopes to see more generations coming together to share stories, memories, and purpose.

💬 Do you volunteer in your community? Share your story in the comments—we’d love to hear it!
