🧡 On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we reflect on the severe housing crisis impacting Indigenous communities across Canada. 🍁Many Indigenous languages don't have a word for "homeless," a term that fails to encompass their deep ties to land and community.

This crisis extends beyond shelter; it's a disconnection from their ancestral lands and ways of life. We're committed to addressing these challenges with respect and collaboration. Let's continually advance toward reconciliation and justice.

One question we frequently get asked is: “What makes the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul different?”

One of the simplest answers is that we can help fill the gaps.

Our volunteers are not always constrained by rigid program mandates that dictate exactly what type of need qualifies for support. Instead, we meet people where they are, listen to their circumstances, and look for practical ways to help them move forward.

A call we received last year illustrates what that can mean.

A man had been injured and was trying to return to the workforce so he could support his family. He had an opportunity to work, but there was one problem: he needed a pair of work boots.

Without the boots, he couldn't work. Without the work, he couldn't earn an income to buy groceries, pay his bills, or maintain stable housing for his family.

The need was simple. The consequences of leaving it unmet were not.

So we helped with the boots.

That is the kind of gap the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul can often fill. Sometimes preventing a much larger crisis doesn't require a massive intervention—it requires someone willing and able to respond to the need directly in front of them.

A pair of boots can be more than a pair of boots. Sometimes, they're a pathway back to work, stability, and independence.

If you'd like to help us continue filling these gaps across Nova Scotia, consider volunteering, donating, or simply sharing our work with others.
