October 10, 2026 | DRIFTLINE
U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly called for Ukraine to replace President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, accusing the Ukrainian leader of prolonging Russia's war and contributing to soaring American diesel prices.
Speaking to reporters Saturday, Trump declared:
"I suggest they get a new leader who can make a deal."
His remarks came just one day after announcing an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin to supply diesel to the United States and global markets, accompanied by a temporary easing of American sanctions on Russian fuel.
WHY IS TRUMP BLAMING UKRAINE?
Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Russian oil refineries as part of its strategy to weaken Moscow's ability to finance its military operations.
Trump argues those attacks have disrupted global diesel supplies and driven up costs for American farmers, truckers and consumers.
However, energy analysts point to a much broader crisis. American diesel prices have risen approximately 70% since the U.S. and Israel launched their war against Iran in February, which severely disrupted global energy markets.
Experts also question whether Trump's agreement with Putin will meaningfully reduce fuel prices.
UKRAINE CONDEMNS THE AGREEMENT
Zelenskyy has strongly criticized the decision to ease sanctions on Russian diesel, warning that additional energy revenues could help Moscow finance its continuing invasion.
He described the agreement as "an investment in a war that must be ended."
The announcement came while Ukrainian representatives were in the United States participating in diplomatic discussions aimed at ending the conflict.
RUSSIAN ATTACKS CONTINUE
The diplomatic confrontation unfolded against a devastating backdrop.
On Saturday, Russian airstrikes killed at least 20 people, including three children, in the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia. Another 18 people were wounded.
Zelenskyy argued that easing economic pressure sends Moscow the wrong message while Russian forces continue attacking Ukrainian communities.
CAN UKRAINE SIMPLY ELECT ANOTHER PRESIDENT?
Ukraine has remained under martial law since Russia launched its full scale invasion in February 2022. Ukrainian law prohibits national elections during martial law.
Organizing a credible vote would also require addressing the safety and voting rights of millions of displaced Ukrainians, military personnel and citizens living under Russian occupation.
A GROWING DIVIDE
The dispute highlights a fundamental disagreement between Washington and Kyiv.
Trump is seeking relief from high American fuel prices and pressing Ukraine to negotiate an end to the war.
Ukraine maintains that reducing pressure on Russia without meaningful security guarantees risks strengthening the very country responsible for the invasion.
The question now is whether Washington's efforts to ease domestic energy costs will further weaken international efforts to constrain Russia's war economy.
