MURDER AT THE MANSION - Chapter 23

“Ethel?” she heard him say. “Ethel, are you all right?”

Ethel grabbed her purse and banged him over the head. “I’m trying to watch the show.”

The stranger looked puzzled. Ethel turned her head to see if the other theatre patrons noticed the rather tall and obnoxious man sitting next to her. But no one seem bothered by him. Perhaps they were too focussed on the stage where furry little creatures were jumping around and singing.

The man shook her and Ethel screamed at the top of her lungs. “Help! Someone help!” The theatre lights came on then and someone was shaking her. “Ethel, Ethel!” she heard the voice say. “It’s me, Sir Percival! Wake up! You’re having a terrible nightmare!”

Ethel opened her eyes and stared into the eyes of her husband. “But you’re dead,” she told him.“The gnomes killed you. Twice.”

“I am most assuredly alive, my dear.” Sir Percival held her close and stroked her hair. “You were having a terrible, terrible nightmare. But it’s over now. Everything is just fine.”

Ethel’s breathing began to slow as she relaxed in Sir Percival’s arms. Winston jumped up on the bed in relief. The cats yawned, stretched and went back to sleep. It was all a dream.

Or was it?

MURDER AT THE MANSION - Chapter 22

Glancing at her watch, Ethel raced upstairs to empty her bladder. Getting up in the middle of a performance to go p*e was embarrassing. Against her better judgement, she had finally decided to attend the production. At least it would be a night out.

At the theatre, she struggled through the row of disgruntled seniors to her seat. The lights dimmed and the curtain rose. A hush settled over the crowd. It was a full house...except for the seat beside Ethel. From the darkened orchestra pit, eerie music from a lone flute filled the silence. Then the music gained a fierce intensity as other, more forceful musical instruments took control.

Ethel felt, rather than saw, someone sit down beside her.

MURDER AT THE MANSION - Chapter 21

Ethel picked up a knife from the kitchen drawer and carefully opened the envelope. Inside was a ticket (front row balcony seating) to Neptune Theatre’s production of “Gnomes-The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.” There was no indication who had sent her the ticket or why. In another lifetime, Ethel and Sir Percival had been loyal patrons of the arts. Now she was afraid to stay in her own home...or venture outside of it.

“Shall I go Winston?” she asked the little terrier. “One bark for no, two barks for yes.”

MURDER AT THE MANSION - Chapter 20

Hallowe’en had come and gone. Ethel and Winston enjoyed the parade of village children who made the trek for her famous candied apples. The cats, on the other hand, preferred their own company and decided to play a few rounds of bridge under Ethel’s bed. Ethel had just poured herself a glass of sherry and turned on the TV to watch “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown”, when she heard a knock on the door. Thinking it was a late “trick or treater”, she opened the door with a smile, but there was no one in sight. Instead, she found an envelope marked “Urgent, open immediately.”
