🍎 **ATIP Haliburton Update – Apples, History & Community!** 🍎

It's been a busy and exciting month for ATIP Haliburton!

🌳 **Haliburton County Fair**
On June 13, ATIP Haliburton was delighted to host a booth at the Haliburton County Fair in Minden, where we enjoyed meeting so many visitors. One of the biggest surprises for many was learning that apples were featured at Haliburton Agricultural Fairs as far back as **1892** and **1907**—a wonderful reminder of our region's rich agricultural heritage.

🍏 **Nature's Place Drop-In**
On June 26, we hosted a drop-in event at **Nature's Place** in the Minden Hills Cultural Centre. Visitors of all ages stopped by to chat about local apple history and heritage, while children had fun creating apple tree crafts. According to Cultural Program Coordinator Robert Wong, attendance was above average, making it a fantastic day of community engagement.

We're also looking forward to returning this fall for special September events, including a harvest season program at the Minden Hills Cultural Centre and a Culinary Arts event in partnership with the Farmers' Market as part of Ontario Culture Days.

A new map featuring public and business locations of apple trees throughout Haliburton County has been created. To make it even better, we're collecting seasonal photos of these trees for next year's Apple Blossom Tour.

The most recent ATIP Haliburton U-Links report, *From Orchards to Kitchens: A Feasibility Study of Seasonal Apple Processing in Haliburton County*, has now been completed! 🍎

This new research explores opportunities to support local apple harvesting, food processing, community kitchens, and value-added apple products throughout Haliburton County. The project continues the important work of documenting and strengthening our region’s unique apple-growing heritage and food security initiatives.

🍎 Help Shape a Local Apple Initiative in Haliburton County

Researchers from Trent University’s Environmental Sciences and Studies program are working with ATIP Haliburton on community-based projects focused on local food systems, sustainability, and economic opportunities.

Two connected research projects are currently underway:

🔹 Local Business Interest – Apple Processing Project
This research explores how businesses in Haliburton County might participate in a seasonal apple initiative—whether by selling local apples or apple products, hosting culinary or processing events, or supporting broader local food efforts.

🔹 Community Kitchen Interest – Apple Processing Project
This project looks at the potential use of existing commercial and community kitchens for seasonal apple processing and preservation. The goal is to reduce food waste, support local food systems, and create a shared fall harvest experience for the community.

Your input will help guide future programming, partnerships, and opportunities in the region.

ATIP Haliburton is thrilled to share that we’ve accepted an invitation from the Minden Horticultural Society to participate in their annual Seedy Saturday on March 28th! 🌿🌻 We can’t wait to connect with fellow gardeners, seed savers, and green thumbs from across the community.

We’re also excited to announce that we’ll be hosting a booth at the Haliburton County Fair on June 13th, organized by the Minden Agricultural Society 🚜🌾 It’s always a fantastic day celebrating local agriculture, community spirit, and rural traditions.

🌾 Harvest Haven: Unveiling Haliburton’s Bounty Through Agri-Tourism 🌟

ATIP Haliburton, in partnership with U-LINKS Centre for Community Research and student researcher, Sadie Snell, from Trent University, is thrilled to announce an exciting new initiative: exploring the potential for a county-wide agri-tourism initiative in Haliburton County!

This project aims to:
🌱 Connect local businesses, groups, events, and attractions related to agriculture and food.
🍎 Increase awareness about local food production and heritage agriculture.
🧺 Promote events and encourage visitors to explore the rich agricultural bounty of Haliburton County.

Student researcher, Sadie Snell, who is studying Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems at Trent University, will be gathering community insights to shape this initiative. She will also be developing a database of agri-tourism organizations, events, and experiences in the county.

As part of this initiative, ATIP Haliburton is expanding its focus to support the broader agri-tourism sector, building on its dedication to promoting and growing the heritage apple industry in Haliburton County.
