We asked Brenda Hsueh of Black Sheep Farm what advice she would give to future women farmers. Here is the wisdom that she shared:
💚 “Visit and work/volunteer on farms to get a feel for what kind of farming, and at what scale, will work for you, physically and financially. Be realistic about how much time, energy and finances you can devote to farming. Start small and grow your operation over time. “

What’s Brenda’s favourite part of what she does?
🐑 “Hanging out with the sheep on pasture and getting to wear clothing made from the flock's fleeces.”

This story is part of our UN Year of the Farmer series, made possible through the generous support of Farm Credit Canada. Thank you for helping us celebrate the farmers whose passion, innovation, and dedication make a lasting impact every day.

This November, Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario is excited to invite you to their 2026 Education Days!

Here, the CFFO brings together farmers, industry leaders, agricultural organizations, and community voices for two engaging events focused on the opportunities and challenges shaping the future of agriculture and rural Ontario🌾

Date: Tuesday, November 17
Location: Stratford

Date: Thursday, November 19
Location: Peterborough

Morning Session: Farmgate to Dinner Plate
Join us for a morning of conversation about agriculture, food, and the important connection between Ontario farmers and consumers. We’ll explore how we can better tell agriculture’s story, strengthen public trust, and help consumers understand where their food comes from and the work that happens long before it reaches their table.

Afternoon Session: The Future of Rural Ontario
The afternoon event will turn the conversation toward the future of our rural communities. Together, we’ll discuss the issues, opportunities, and decisions that will influence rural Ontario and agriculture in the years ahead.

We are pleased to welcome a strong lineup of speakers, including Fresh Air Farmer - Andrew Campbell, Steph Towers, Lisa Thompson, Christine Garneau Bisaillon for Brant County Mayor, Brianne Curtis, and Ben and Jenn Loewith from Summit Station Dairy & Creamery, who will bring a variety of experiences and perspectives to these important conversations.

These events are about more than listening to presentations, they are an opportunity to connect, learn, ask questions, share perspectives, and strengthen relationships across Ontario agriculture.

One challenge Brenda Hsueh has on Black Sheep Farm is that oftentimes, equipment is just too big and heavy to move by herself. Tractors will have pedals or levers that are hard to reach.

We asked Brenda what she wished more people understood about organic practices, this is what she said:

💚 “Farming organically isn't just about ticking boxes or following rules, it's about understanding natural systems and always looking for ways to adjust our farming to improve soil and animal health”

As we celebrate the UN Year of the Farmer, Brenda’s story highlights the importance of the community women farmers work to maintain. They are leaders who are advancing agriculture while inspiring the next generation, while giving them a safe space to grow and learn. We're grateful to Farm Credit Canada for supporting this initiative and helping us share the stories of the farmers making a lasting impact across Ontario.

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to recognize the tragic history of the cultural genocide and multi-generational impacts of Canada's Indian Residential School system.

Both the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day offers a time to honour residential school survivors, remember the children who never returned home, and be part of the ongoing process of reconciliation and reconciliACTION.

Hello Ontario Organic Community,

On September 30, our office will be closed in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

This day is an opportunity to pause and acknowledge the history and ongoing legacy of residential schools, colonialism, and the profound and lasting impacts on First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities.

Truth and reconciliation ask more of us than remembrance alone. They ask us to listen, learn, reflect on the history of this land, and consider how we can contribute to meaningful change in the places and communities where we live and work.

As an organization connected to agriculture, land, food, and community, we have a responsibility to reflect on the systems that have shaped how we relate to land and to one another. This includes learning about Indigenous relationships with land and food, and engaging with the work of decolonization in agriculture and our food systems.

Decolonization is not something we can reduce to a single day or statement. It is an ongoing process of learning, questioning the systems and histories that have shaped our sector, and making space for Indigenous knowledge, leadership, and relationships with land.

We encourage our community to use the day as an opportunity to learn from Indigenous voices, reflect, and consider what meaningful reconciliation can look like in our own work and communities.

Our office will reopen on Monday, October 5th, 2026.

September is Organic Month, Canada's largest celebration of all things organic 🌾
From farmers and producers, to retailers and consumers, each role in the organic value chain is important. During this month, we take time to thank everyone who chooses organic and brings this sector to life.

To wrap up Organic Month, learn why Organic is Health Conscious:

When comparing individual organic and non-organic food, studies often yield inconclusive results. But, meta analyses reveal comparisons between wider bodies of research...

These show that:
🥩 Organic meat and milk have about 50% more omega-3 fatty acids
🍎 Organic plant-based foods contained 18-69% more antioxidants

But when it comes to organic and your health, it’s more about what isn’t there. The way our food is produced is just as important as what we choose to eat. Organic farming removes the risk of toxic chemicals and antibiotics from our food supply, while also enhancing soil quality for stronger, healthier plants.
