Did you know Varroa mites are especially attracted to drone brood cells! 🤔

This is because drone brood takes longer to develop than worker brood, giving the mites longer to reproduce and reach maturity.

The Canadian Honey Council has received registration approval for oxalic acid and glycerin strips! 🎉

The registration for this DIY treatment option came after many years of work, including two years of Tech Transfer conducting field studies, data collection, honey sample collection, and data analysis (pictured here).

This approval is a testament to the CHC, OBA, and the many others who work tirelessly to support Canadian beekeepers. 🇨🇦💪🏻

The struggles of trying to keep a beekeeping technician inside during the winter. 😖❄️

Did you know bees practice good hygiene too? 🐝

Hygienic bees are better at tolerating Varroa mites and brood diseases, making this trait a key part of improving honey bee stock.

When our team tests for hygienic behaviour, we freeze patches of brood with liquid nitrogen. The next day, we assess two different things:

1. Uncapping dead brood cells
2. Removing the cell contents

Colonies that remove 75–100% of affected cells are recommended as breeder colonies for the next generation.

Better hygiene = healthier colonies! 🧼

To kick off the New Year, we’re looking at some throwback moments of the TTP. 🐝📸
Did you know the Technology Transfer Program has been supporting Ontario beekeepers since 1994?

While the faces and field days may change, our mission remains the same: delivering education, conducting research, supporting the ORHBS breeding program, and sharing practical knowledge to help Ontario’s beekeeping industry thrive.

Here’s to continuing that work in the year ahead! 🎉
