Join us at noon on Sunday, March 15th for our annual Boil Up & Ice Fishing Event as Grand Riverkeeper Labrador recognizes the International Day of Action for Rivers!
Find us on the Terrington Basin by taking the road to the Sea Plane Dock that’s off Route 520 to North West River (from HVGB it’s just before the Otter Creek Cabin turnoff or just after coming from NWR). You can join us there on snowmobile by taking any trail that leads to the basin.
We’ll have signs on the road turnoff and the Labrador flag and GRK banner on the ice. Just look for the campfire and people ice-fishing.
We are partnering with long-time activist and ice-fisherman, Edward Mesher for this celebration of our river and the bounty it provides! Thanks to our amazing volunteers we’ll have hot food for all ages along with coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. You’re welcome to bring along some food to share, something to sit on, and your ice-fishing gear!
This is an important year as we see NL Hydro/Nalcor and Hydro Quebec set sights on Gull Island through a very questionable MOU. One that gives Hydro Quebec the power to not only build the Gull Island Dam, but to build further dams in Labrador at any time in the future, whileaverage citizens here in Labrador are ignored completely.
The theme for this year’s event is “OUR RIVERS-OUR FUTURE”
And there’s no better time to highlight what Grand Riverkeeper Labrador and our allies have been doing to bring together peer-reviewed documents on the massive impacts of mega hydro projects on fisheries, cultures, biodiversity and more, with special emphasis on climate change and the warming in the Arctic. Handouts will be available at the event.
Let’s make this year’s event a show of support for the protection of the Grand (a.k.a. Churchill) River.
Please share this post with whomever you wish and we hope to see you on the ice!
