🏛 Student Employee Spotlight – Gimli Saga Digital Museum

One of the most exciting parts of the Gimli Saga Digital Archive has been working with talented university students who are helping research, write, and preserve the history of Gimli and New Iceland. Today we are pleased to introduce another member of our student archive team.

Name: Alexandria Boehm
University: McGill University
Program: Art History and Chemistry
Role: Historical Research and Writing

About the Student

Alexandria Boehm is originally from Toronto and is currently completing her undergraduate degree at McGill University in Montreal. She is studying both Art History and Chemistry with the goal of becoming an art conservator, a field dedicated to preserving historical works of art and cultural heritage.

In her free time, Alexandria enjoys sewing and painting, combining creativity with her interest in historical materials and craftsmanship.

Work on the Gimli Saga Project

As part of the Gimli Saga team, Alexandria is writing articles on the history of Icelandic people in Canada. Her research helps bring historical stories and community history to life for the growing Gimli Saga Digital Archive.

Her work contributes to making the history of Gimli and New Iceland more accessible to researchers, families, and future generations.

Why This Work Matters

Projects like Gimli Saga are non profit and depend on students and volunteers who are passionate about preserving history and cultural heritage. We are grateful to Alexandria and the many students helping build this growing digital museum.

🏛 Student Spotlight – Gimli Saga Digital Museum

One of the most exciting parts of the Gimli Saga Digital Archive has been working with talented university students who are helping research, digitize, and preserve the history of Gimli and New Iceland. Today we are pleased to introduce one of the students helping bring this growing digital museum to life.

Name: Alexandria Irwin
University: University of Saskatchewan
Program: History
Role: Student Archivist
Location: Treaty 6 Territory and the Homeland of the Métis

About the Student

Born and raised in Windsor, Ontario, Alexandria first discovered her interest in archiving and digitization while exploring her father’s collection of antique radios. That curiosity grew into a passion for history and preservation and eventually led her to study history at the University of Saskatchewan.

Work on the Gimli Saga Project

Through the Riipen program, Alexandria joined the Gimli Saga Digital Archive as a student archivist. She has been researching and organizing historical materials connected to the Icelandic settlement in Gimli and the wider New Iceland community.

Alexandria recently completed research on Betel Home and is currently digitizing the final portion of more than 1,200 pages of historical documents connected to the project.

Why This Work Matters

Every document digitized and every story preserved helps ensure that the history of Gimli and New Iceland will remain accessible for future generations.

We are grateful to Alexandria and the many students contributing their time and talent to this growing digital archive.

Before Connor McDavid, before Sidney Crosby, Canada’s first Olympic hockey gold medal was won by a team from Winnipeg you may have never heard of. 🏒

In 1920, the Winnipeg Falcons, made up almost entirely of Icelandic immigrants who once faced discrimination, became Canada’s first Olympic hockey champions. This week, the Winnipeg Jets are honouring that legacy during Wednesday night's "Olympic send off" game for Jets players headed to Italy!

It’s a remarkable story of perseverance, pride and hockey history that deserves to be remembered.
