It’s Police Week, and today Samantha Abbott and Wilson Chaulk of the Gander and Area Citizens’ Crime Prevention Association had the opportunity to stop by the Gander RCMP Detachment to say thank you to the officers and staff who work hard every day to help keep our community safe.

We are grateful for the dedication, professionalism, and compassion shown by our local RCMP members -not only during emergencies, but through the everyday work they do behind the scenes to support and protect our town.

Thank you for your service and commitment to the people of Gander!

The RNC is urging the public to be vigilant against Valentine’s romance scams.

Criminals prey on people’s emotions to cash in on affection by targeting those seeking companionship on social media, dating websites, and messaging apps. Fraudsters create fake identities to build trust and romantic relationships with victims before claiming to need money quickly, most often citing a medical emergency, legal fees, travel expenses, or other bills. Requests for money are often made through untraceable means including cash, wire transfer, gift cards, bitcoin, or cryptocurrency.

Before you fall head over heels, the RNC wants to make sure you are not falling for fraud. To protect yourself from a romance scam:

☑️ Never send money or share financial information with those you have not met in person.
☑️ Be cautious if the relationship is moving too fast.
☑️ Be suspicious if you are asked to keep the request for money a secret.

Anyone who suspects they have fallen victim to fraud is urged to stop communication immediately and save all correspondence. Report to the RNC by calling 709-729-8000 or use the online reporting system.

Fraudulent activity can also be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
