The International Lounge Foundation is delighted to invite guests of all ages to a very special cultural celebration in the iconic International Lounge:

The official Launch of Painter of Flight

The opening of the Painter of Flight Art Exhibit at Gallery ’59

Inspired by celebrated Canadian artist Kenneth Lochhead and his monumental mural, Flight and Its Allegories, this extraordinary new children’s book transforms an important piece of Canadian art and aviation history into a beautifully illustrated story for a new generation.

Created by Dawn Baker, Painter of Flight is more than a book. It is a celebration of art, imagination, aviation and the remarkable cultural legacy.

And there could be no more fitting place to officially launch it.

Guests will have an opportunity to meet Dawn, experience the original illustrations, learn more about Kenneth Lochhead and Flight and Its Allegories, and celebrate the creation of a book that connects generations through art and storytelling.

There is something wonderfully full-circle about seeing these original illustrations displayed just steps away from the monumental mural that inspired them!

After months of creativity, collaboration, and community spirit, the 9/11 Community Mosaic Mural is ready to be unveiled.

Please join us as we reveal this very special piece of community art, created from hundreds of individually painted tiles and brought together to tell one powerful story — a story of kindness, community, connection, and hospitality.

As we mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11, this mural will stand as a lasting tribute to Gander’s response during those extraordinary days — and to the community spirit that continues to define us today.

We’re getting closer to the official launch!

Painter of Flight is now available at Gander Goods - introducing readers to the remarkable story behind Kenneth Lochhead’s iconic mural Flight and Its Allegories.

On September 19th, we’ll gather at Gallery ‘59 in the International Lounge to celebrate the official launch of an exhibit featuring Dawn Baker’s original art from the book.

There’s much more to share!

The story doesn’t end with the book.

Following the official launch of Painter of Flight, Gallery ‘59 will host an exhibition of Dawn Baker’s original artwork created for the book.

Visitors will have the opportunity to experience the paintings up close and discover how one of Canada’s most important murals inspired an entirely new artistic journey.

Every page of Painter of Flight began the same way—with a blank sheet of paper, a pencil, and an idea.

Creating the illustrations for this book was a journey of patience, imagination, and countless hours at the painting table. Each illustration evolved one careful brushstroke at a time, gradually transforming from a simple sketch into a vibrant watercolour filled with colour, texture, and life.

From Canada’s provincial flowers to the maple leaves that would later become a symbol of our nation, each element helps tell a larger story—one that celebrates art, history, imagination, and the spirit of Canada.
