Established in 1885 in Continuous Service to the Community since 1920...

One of the primary aims of the Gananoque Horticultural Society is Community beautification. This is accomplished by encouraging local residents to develop their own gardens through our educational speakers and seminars. Members and visitors have the opportunity to see what others have done on garden tours, as well as through

flower exhibitions and competitions. The Gananoque Trillium Award is presented to the most attractive, well-maintained and planned garden, as viewed from the street. The winning gardens must look good throughout the growing season, and winners are notified in the fall, and invited to our annual meeting and potluck supper in January. We hold a plant sale each May to encourage affordable gardening Each fall, club volunteers plant hundreds of bulbs around the Town Hall as well as at the east gates of Gananoque We maintain our own horticultural park on Main St.

I think of early June as a 'Symphony in Purple' in the Park. True, the peonies are also blooming and another peony is unfurling its petals right now. However, the alliums, Siberian Iris and iris, lilacs and Columbine all combine their shades of purple into a lovely harmonious vista.

The light on the blooms in the Park was fabulous this morning. The peonies were glowing, and the Guernsey Cream Clematis shone in the light. A baby bunny hid under the hosta leaves - so cute, but they can be very destructive.

While peonies are the stars this month, there are many other plants to enjoy in the Park. The white lilac on the east side of the Park shows off its double blooms next to a nearby spirea which is loaded with blossom. A lovely Korean lilac in the Pollinator Garden is covered in flowers. The first Siberian irises have come out, as have the delicate irises in the central garden. The Brunnera in the garden along the fence have beautiful white veined leaves that shine all summer, and right now their forget me not like flowers drift above the plants. Two types of Japanese painted ferns are nestled into the garden along the stone wall, and brighten up that shady area.

Our 'Peonies in Bloom' feature starts this week. Look for the new brochure in our Library box in the Park. The flamboyant pale pink flowers of the tree peony are coming into full bloom, while Coral Sunset's rich flowers are also almost fully out. Soon, a succession of the peonies will bloom, continuing until the end of June.

PEONIES IN BLOOM. Come see our peony collection in the Gananoque Horticultural Society Part at 21 Main Street (at the corner of Mill Street).
In the month of June, you’ll be amazed by the outsize presence of peonies. From a tree peony, with large, extravagantly frilled pale pink blooms, and an Itoh peony, with dark pink, single flowers to the perennial favourite, double pink ‘Sarah Bernhardt, you’ll discover more than 20 varieties of peonies in the Park, all commanding a second look.

With just a bit of sun and warmth, everything is growing quickly in the Park. The extravagant pink blossoms of the tree peony are just about to burst forth, while another peony, possibly Coral Sunset, is also starting to bloom. The large blooms of the early clematis, Guernsey Cream, continue to open. Nearby a deep purple Columbine has started to open. A Jazzberry petunia planted along the upper wall looks like it has settled in nicely, and is starting to spill over the edge. There are new blooms to enjoy every day.

The 'Guernsey Cream' Clematis has been on the verge of blooming for several days, and today it has come into full flower, climbing up the maple tree near Mill Street. Radishes and lettuce, planted last week, have already popped through the ground in the 4 square garden. A number of Spanish Bluebells are flowering in the garden near the driveway, somewhat hidden by the perennials in front of them. While the very fragrant pink lilac is starting to fade, the deeper purple and the white lilacs along the back of the Park are now in full bloom. There are changes in the gardens every day.

The lovely 'Purple Prince' Tulips in the central garden at our Horticultural Park have finished for this year, after almost a full month of blooming. This morning, four of us put in the petunias that were selected for this summer, in amongst the tulip leaves which will be pulled out in a few weeks once they die back. Many thanks to Jen, Jordan and Nadia for digging in a total of over 60 petunias. Three varieties were chosen - Surfinia Vista Snowdrift, Surfinia Vista Bubblegum, and Surfinia Vista Jazzberry - and planted in a rainbow of colour. Within a month, the petunias should have filled in the garden, and will be spreading out towards the edges. Petunias are our Society flower, and are also the Town flower, and so we use them a lot in our gardens. Come out and enjoy!
