CSF is a non-profit engaged in creative placemaking, a planning approach that introduces arts and culture into new and existing community spaces to create lively hubs of artistic and cultural activity. Currently, we are looking for one or two individuals to join our volunteer Board of Directors. Time commitment would be about 5 to 7 hours per month.

A resounding "Yes" was the reply by city artists to this question in CreativeSpaces-Fredericton's 2024 Artist Survey. With the City of Fredericton announcing in January its public consultations for its 2027 Arts Plan, this is the moment for creatives to let the city know directly their needs for dedicated and affordable places to do their creative practice. Our mission is working to make spaces for creativity. If this mission interests you, we are seeking a flex-time volunteer (a few hours per week) interested in assisting us with background research, data assembly, and campaigns (mail and email).

In Fredericton, is it hard for artists to find studio space?

80.6% of artists we surveyed said “Yes.”

The City of Fredericton is well behind other Canadian municipalities in offering its artists dedicated studio spaces in which to carry out their creative practices.

CSF is working to change that by advocating, to the city and the private sector, the need for creative placemaking hubs where artists want to work and people want to be.

In CSF’s Artist Survey Report, 90.3% of the survey’s respondents indicated they were in need of dedicated studio space. This has been a longstanding issue in Fredericton, identified by many arts organizations, and the City itself.

We’re taking what we learned from Fredericton artists and turning it into action. To see adequate affordable studio spaces provided to city artists, CSF will be:

• Reaching out to city property managers to seek their engagement in offering spaces to artists.
• Recommending to city planners the diverse ways Fredericton could make more artist studio spaces available.
• Promoting public and private partnerships to foster creative placemaking hubs in proposed and existing city developments.

We asked; artists answered.

Last September, 31 Fredericton-based creative professionals responded to CSF’s online survey which was about better understanding their studio space needs.

The results are clear:
Most indicated that having a dedicated studio space would be preferable to what they are currently using (homes, garages, church basements and university classrooms).

We envision a Fredericton where artists have the spaces they need to create, teach, rehearse, exhibit, and sell their work. Here’s how we’re working towards that:

• Advocating for affordable studio spaces in Fredericton
• Catalysing new creative placemaking initiatives
• Connecting artists to the city's available studio spaces
• Educating others on providing spaces for creativity
• Showcasing Fredericton artists' work in new creative spaces
• Offering CSF's planning services
