Another day, another wharf! This week, our team conducted an accessibility review of the Queenstown wharf on behalf of the St. John River Society.

From arriving at the site to finding a place to sit, enjoying the waterfront, fishing or spending time with family and friends, there are many different ways people use and connect with these spaces.

Accessibility is about thinking beyond the obvious and asking an important question: Can everyone feel comfortable, welcome, and included here?

🚻 Sometimes poor design isn’t obvious.

Imagine using a wheelchair or another mobility device.

You roll up to the sink.

You turn on the water.

You wash your hands.

And then you realize the paper towel dispenser is on the other side of the washroom.

So, with freshly washed hands, you now have to touch your wheels, walker, crutches or mobility device just to get to something to dry them.

Then dry your hands.

It seems like a small detail.

But good accessibility is often found in the small details.

A well-designed accessible washroom should allow someone to wash, rinse and dry their hands before needing to touch their mobility device again.

Soap.

Water.

Drying.

All within easy reach.

Think of it as a one-stop shop at the sink.

Because accessibility isn’t just about whether a feature exists.

It’s about whether all the pieces work together to support independence, dignity and ease of use.

Next time you’re in a public washroom, take a look around.

👉 Could you wash and completely dry your hands without taking a step away from the sink?

You might be surprised by how often the answer is no.

Have you lived with a mobility disability for at least one year?

Ability NB is seeking peer mentors!

Peer mentors are guides in someone’s journey with a mobility disability; it is a great way to share your personal experiences and insights to help someone else.

Peer mentors need to be understanding, empathetic, trustworthy, and willing to share.

If you enjoy helping others and want to give back to your community, this is the volunteer position for you!

You can get involved by emailing [email protected] or by calling 1-866-462-9555.

Introducing the Peer Mentors at Ability NB!

We asked our mentors why they decided to become a mentor with the Peer Mentorship Program. Here were their answers.

I decided to become a Peer Mentor because when I had my spinal cord injury.

I didn’t have any peer support to help me. When the times got rough I had to motivate myself, to adapt and learn to my new situation.

I refused to be limited by a wheelchair, I pushed myself to the max every day.

I was determined, and set my mind to being able to have the freedom I previously had post injury.

Giving up was never an option.

I try to live every day to the fullest and I live by "you can do anything you put your mind to, if you think positive you will get positive".

Being a peer mentor is my way of helping a community of people to feel understood, feel supported and to never feel alone.

Michael Armstrong

Stay tuned for the next mentor introduction coming your way.

We would like to thank our mentors for their support and dedication, you are valued members of the Peer Team.
