It is FRIDAY so TGIF everyone! The second to last weekend of summer! We hope you have a great one!

As we get ready to turn our screens off for the day, we would like to introduce you to our newest board member! Let's learn a little bit more about Abbey-Leigh Humphries!

"Abbey is an educator, researcher, and activist living in HRM. She is a survivor of a violent crime and is deeply passionate about supporting others and dismantling the culture that allows domestic, s*xual, and intimate partner violence to occur. After learning about We're Here For You Canada, she knew immediately she needed to be involved.

Abbey has worked with community organizations and with universities, but her favourite thing to do is work with youth. Her family has called her 'a professional big sister'. To relax, she loves to get outside, perform burlesque, or hang out with her wife and cats. She's proudly q***r and neurodivergent 🌈💗✨"

Welcome to the fifth post of our Back to Basics series.

SANE stands for s*xual assault nurse examiner and FNE stands for forensic nurse examiner. These are the professionals that conduct forensic exams for survivors when they present to the hospital. They are compassionate and caring registered nurses who have completed specialized education and clinical preparation in medical forensic care for patients who have experienced s*xual/physical assault or abuse.

SANEs/FNEs provide supportive care and can provide medical/forensic examination, expert testimony, collection and storage of forensic evidence, referrals to different specialists and other professionals if needed, etc.

There is wonderful work being done across Canada to support survivors. The s*xual violence resource centres are pivotal to creating change and supporting survivors.

Our friends at The Willow Centre Sexual Violence Supports for Charlotte County have partnered with the RCMP to create a safe, warm space, where interviews can be done outside of the police station.

This is an amazing way to help those reporting, to feel cared for and to help them report acts of violence in a non clinical or sterile space.

WHFYC has had the privilege of being to the The Willow Centre Sexual Violence Supports for Charlotte County and it is truly a welcoming, beautiful space that feels soft, gentle, and caring.

Well done and kudos on a great partnership!

Welcome to the fourth post of our Back to Basics series, where we are discussing s*xual violence.

Sexual violence refers to any s*xual act, attempt to obtain a s*xual act, or unwanted s*xual activity that is committed without a person's freely given consent. This can include s*xual assault (such as unwanted touching, unwanted kissing, unwanted ge***al contact), r**e, s*xual harassment (such as creating hostile environments due to someone's s*x, comments of a s*xual or gender-related nature that makes a person feel offended, humiliated, intimidated, or unsafe), image-based s*xual abuse (e.g., s*xtortion), coercion and manipulation, and child s*xual abuse.
