The Fernie Pride Society Board of Directors is looking for a Treasurer to join our team!

We’re looking for someone who is organized, community-minded, and excited to help support the work we do creating inclusive, welcoming spaces for 2SLGBTQIA+ people in the Elk Valley and South Country.

The Treasurer helps keep our finances on track by overseeing financial records, helping prepare budgets and reports, and working with the Board to ensure transparent and responsible financial practices. No need to be an accountant — just someone reliable who’s comfortable with numbers and willing to learn.

The Executive Director completes all daily, monthly, and annual bookkeeping so the Treasurer position is generally an oversight role - no day-to-day bookkeeping is required.

Time commitment is one meeting per month that can be attended in-person or virtually, lasting approximately 1.5 hours (we usually do not meet in July) and roughly one hour per month of financial oversight in advance of the meeting.

This is a great opportunity to get involved with a passionate local organization, meet new people, and help make a positive impact in our community.

Do you live in an Elk Valley or South Country community? Want to volunteer for a fabulous community nonprofit? Want to learn more? Contact Courtney at [email protected]!

Today, May 17, is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Inters*xphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) and was created in 2004 to draw the attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by le***an, gay, bis*xual, transgender, inters*x, and all other people with diverse s*xual orientations, gender identities or expressions, and s*x characteristics.

The date of May 17 was specifically chosen to commemorate the WHO's decision in 1990 to declassify homos*xuality as a mental disorder.

May 17 is now celebrated in more than 130 countries, including some where homos*xual acts remain illegal (66 countries still have criminalized homos*xuality). From a global perspective, Canada is a leader in supporting IDAHOBIT. In fact, IDAHOBIT originated with Fondation Èmergence in Quebec and received unanimous support at the 2006 Declaration of Montreal on Le***an, Gay, Bis*xual, and Transgender Human Rights.

Despite the progress that has been made over the years, 2SLGBTQ+ people still regularly face harassment, intimidation, and violence in their daily lives on the basis of their s*xual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. This has to end and with the power of many, we will continue to fight for an inclusive, fair, and just society for all.

The IDAHOBIT theme for 2026 is “at the heart of democracy” and it reflects that time and again, 2SLGBTQIA+ people have resisted, rolled up their sleeves together with all the good people caring about their communities, and sowed the seeds of change. On IDAHOBIT 2026, and every day, you are invited to join in at the heart of democracy: together, we can prepare the ground for a better future for everyone.

At the heart of democracy is a powerful reminder that the soil of truly democratic societies must be rich in meaningful equity and justice for all, fostering the flourishing of the entire community.

Red Dress Day honours missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2-Spirit people.

The day honours and brings awareness to the thousands of Indigenous women, girls, and 2-Spirit people who have been subject to disproportionate violence in so-called Canada. Red Dress Day was inspired by Métis artist Jaime Black’s REDress Project installation in 2010, in which she hung empty, red dresses to represent the missing and murdered women. Red dresses have become symbolic of the crisis as a result of her installation.

May 5 was the birthday of Lisa Marie Young, a 21-year-old Tla-o-qui-aht woman who disappeared under suspicious circumstances from Nanaimo on Canada Day 2002. Despite hundreds of tips from the public, RCMP investigators have made no progress in the case.

In Canada, Indigenous women, girls, and 2-Spirit people face disproportionate amounts of violence. While Indigenous women account for less than 5 percent of the Canadian population, they make up 24% of female homicide victims.

Despite clear calls to action from the Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, Indigenous communities remain met with apathy or systemic opposition.

Every year, red dresses are added to the count.

This year, we are adding our voice to the national call for the creation and implementation of the Red Dress Alert and for better Missing Persons legislation.

Red Dress Day is a day to pay respect to the victims and their survivors and raise awareness of this gender based and racist violence. Commit to even greater amplification of the voices of those affected and advocating for change and be effective allies in this fight for justice.

Pride doesn’t run on rainbows.
It thrives because of commitment and amazing people like you.

Right here in the Elk Valley and South Country, the Fernie Pride Society provides real, year-round support by creating safe spaces, running programs for people of all ages, hosting inclusive community events, and helping people access resources they might not otherwise have in a small town.

For many, these aren’t just 'things'. They're connection, support, and a sense of belonging.

But this work doesn’t happen on its own.

It’s built, and sustained, by community.

If you’re able to give, your donation helps keep these programs and spaces alive right here in Fernie and the Elk Valley.

Help keep Pride alive in the Elk Valley. 🌈Donate today at https://shorturl.at/W8H8v
