05/17/2026
Today, May 17, is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Inters*xphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) and was created in 2004 to draw the attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by le***an, gay, bis*xual, transgender, inters*x, and all other people with diverse s*xual orientations, gender identities or expressions, and s*x characteristics.
The date of May 17 was specifically chosen to commemorate the WHO's decision in 1990 to declassify homos*xuality as a mental disorder.
May 17 is now celebrated in more than 130 countries, including some where homos*xual acts remain illegal (66 countries still have criminalized homos*xuality). From a global perspective, Canada is a leader in supporting IDAHOBIT. In fact, IDAHOBIT originated with Fondation Èmergence in Quebec and received unanimous support at the 2006 Declaration of Montreal on Le***an, Gay, Bis*xual, and Transgender Human Rights.
Despite the progress that has been made over the years, 2SLGBTQ+ people still regularly face harassment, intimidation, and violence in their daily lives on the basis of their s*xual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. This has to end and with the power of many, we will continue to fight for an inclusive, fair, and just society for all.
The IDAHOBIT theme for 2026 is “at the heart of democracy” and it reflects that time and again, 2SLGBTQIA+ people have resisted, rolled up their sleeves together with all the good people caring about their communities, and sowed the seeds of change. On IDAHOBIT 2026, and every day, you are invited to join in at the heart of democracy: together, we can prepare the ground for a better future for everyone.
At the heart of democracy is a powerful reminder that the soil of truly democratic societies must be rich in meaningful equity and justice for all, fostering the flourishing of the entire community.
