Welcome to 1st Exeter Scouts!

We are part of the Tri-Shores Council of Scouts Canada and our volunteers currently offer programming to youth ranging in ages from 5-17.

We are quickly approaching the start of our 2026-2027 year. We are currently full for Beavers and Cubs and need at least 2 Scouter (Leader) volunteers, 1 for each, in order to open up more spaces. If we have parents who are able to volunteer we can accept more registrations. Time commitment can be limited to just weekly meetings (approximately 1-1.5 hours) or you can be involved in the planning as well. Even part time or occasional availability helps.

Scouter Introduction: Scouter Wendi

Wendi started with scouts almost 9 years ago. At the time her family had recently moved back to the area and her son was in Beavers. Wendi started her scouting journey as a Cub Scouter and has since moved to being a Beaver Scouter.

Wendi really enjoys watching the kids grow to become individuals and gain independence. The transformation that she sees, especially with the young Beavers, she describes as being incredible. Seeing their imagination and watching them try something for the first time keeps her signing up every year as a volunteer. Wendi believes that while there are always challenges in any role and some days are difficult while balancing full time work, family and volunteering the kids come first and as a group of scouters we are able to give them a great experience

We are looking for volunteers to join our team. Whether you want to dive into as a full time scouter or want to help out occasionally now is the perfect time to join as we start getting ready for our 2026-2027 year. No experience is necessary, each scouter has unique experiences that benefit our programs.

Scouter Introduction: Scouter Nathan

Nathan's scouting journey started as a young kid all the way back in Beavers. Nathan continued in scouts throughout his youth progressing from a Beaver all the way through Ventures and then became a Scouter. During his time as a youth in Scouts Nathan was able to earn the Chief Scout and Queens Venture awards.

Nathan has done a bit of everything as a scouter. He has been a leader for all the sections (Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Ventures) and is currently most active as a scouter for Beavers, Scouts and Ventures. He is always ready to jump in with whichever section needs it. Nathan also looks after tracking badges and sorting out badges to be awarded once a youth has earned them. Nathan has enjoyed the opportunity to go to a number of Scouts Jamborees both as a scouter and through an offer of service in other roles.

Outside of scouts Nathan likes to go camping, enjoys 5 pin bowling and challenging himself with puzzles.

Scouter Introduction: Scouter Julie

Julie is our newest scouter and has now been part of 1st Exeter for just under 2 years. Julie started as a part time / fill in Cub scouter and this past year stepped into the role of being a full time Cub leader. Julie also manages our social media sharing all the amazing adventures we have with the community.

Julie loves getting to see the excitement and creativity that come with each new idea and experience as well as the pride the youth show when they have met a challenge. Julie has enjoyed helping to take the interests and ideas that our cubs come up with and turn it into memorable adventures that keep the youth engaged while teaching them new skills along the way. Seeing the youth grow as people and be come more confident as they gain skills and experiences that will benefit them throughout their life is something she has found particularly rewarding.

Outside scouting Julie can often be found working across Huron County as a paramedic. When she does take time off she is most often enjoying time with her dog, out kayaking, sailing and camping in the summer, curling in the winter or simply sitting somewhere quiet with a good book (of course her dog is nearby for that time too).

Scouter Introductions: Scouter Stacey

Stacey first joined 1st Exeter Scouting on September 1, 2010, starting as a Cub Leader for six years. She then spent two years as both a Beaver and Cub Leader before taking a four-year break while her youngest explored her passion for hockey. In 2021, Stacey returned to the group as Treasurer, a role she continues to enjoy today.

Scouting has been a family experience for Stacey, as all three of her children have been involved in the program over the years. One of her favourite memories was having the opportunity to attend the Canadian Jamboree (CJ) as a leader and having her son join her for that incredible experience.

Throughout her Scouting journey, Stacey has participated in many camps, events, and activities with the group, creating countless memories and experiences along the way. She has also had the opportunity to attend the Canadian Jamboree (CJ) as a leader and was a member of the steering committee for the 2024 Pacific Jamboree (PJ). As part of the steering committee, she played a key role in planning the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and served as the lead organizer for Cub Day, taking on the role of Akela for the event. She brings strong skills in organization, planning, teamwork, and keeping things running behind the scenes, helping to create memorable experiences and ensure quality programs for youth.

Her favourite part of Scouting is watching youth grow, take on challenges, build confidence, and discover what they are capable of. She also loves the friendships that have been created over the years - both within the local Scouting community and across Canada. The fun, laughs, memories, and opportunities that come from being part of Scouting are what makes the experience so rewarding.

When Stacey isn’t busy with Scouting, she enjoys going on trips, attending concerts, hiking, spending time with family, watching the sunsets, and sitting in her backyard soaking up the sunshine and warmth. She also enjoys watching her youngest daughter play her favourite position - guarding the net as a hockey goalie - and cheering her on from the stands.

Stacey volunteers because she believes in the impact Scouting has on young people and loves being part of a program that helps youth become stronger, more confident individuals while creating memories that last a lifetime.

Scouter Introductions: Scouter Matt

Matt’s Scouting journey started as a youth, where he went through the program himself as a Beaver, Cub, and Scout. His positive experiences and the value he saw in the program brought him back years later as a leader. In 2014, Matt joined 1st Exeter Scouting as a Beaver Leader, where he spent three years before moving up to Cubs as Akela for seven years. Since 2024, Matt has taken on the role of Group Administrator, a position he continues to enjoy today.

Scouting has been a family experience for Matt, as all three of his boys went through the program as well. Seeing the impact the program had on his own children helped inspire him to return as a volunteer and continue providing those same opportunities to other youth.

Throughout his Scouting journey, Matt has been involved in many activities, events, and experiences that help make the program memorable for youth. He especially enjoys being involved in Kub Kar workshops and rallies, helping youth build their skills, creativity, and confidence while having fun along the way. Matt has also had the opportunity to be a Troop Leader for CJ17, an Offer of Service for PJ19, and was part of the steering committee for PJ24 as the Manager of Fire Services.

Matt believes in the opportunities Scouting provides youth to grow, build confidence, develop skills, and create lifelong outdoor experiences. He enjoys being part of a program that encourages youth to challenge themselves, learn new things, and make memories that last a lifetime.

When Matt isn’t busy with Scouting, he enjoys hunting, boating, fishing, spending time outdoors, relaxing in his backyard and spending quality time with family. He is also passionate about serving his community as a volunteer firefighter.

Matt volunteers because he believes in the impact Scouting has on youth and enjoys helping create the experiences, friendships, and adventures that make the program so meaningful.

Last week out scouters got together to wrap up the year with out Scouter Appreciation dinner and tradition of birthday cake for Scouter Nathan (he gets the most amazing cakes!). As we don’t have meetings over the summer we will be sharing introductions to our incredible group of scouters. Stay tuned for those posts through the summer!

Monday was our last adventure for the year and it couldn’t have been a more perfect night to get out on the water. Our Cubs and Scouts spent the evening at Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority’s Morrison Dam putting the paddling skills they learned to good use. We were fortunate to have a couple of beavers swimming in amongst our canoes so everyone got a good close look at them and how they react to visitors when they surfaced right beside us.
