The cubs had a packed meeting this week working on paddling skills ahead of our scheduled canoeing adventure. They learned how to choose a lifejacket or pfd and how to make sure it fits, parts of a canoe, kayak and paddle, how to size a canoe paddle and some basic paddling strokes. We also went over paddling and water safety and what to if a boat capsizes, someone falls out or if there is an emergency.

We finished the night off with some bowling with a throw bag or throwing line donut. Everyone did an amazing job got at least one block down. They all kept their PFD or lifejacket on for almost the entire night too. They all know that even during indoor paddling adventures a PFD only does its job if you are wearing it!

This week the scouts spent their meeting working on lashing with a goal of making a shelter they could use to sleep in. Everyone came up with something a little different for their shelters but it looks like everyone might stay dry if they needed.

This week it was the beavers and cubs turn to learn some first aid. The beavers fixed up their teddy bears small cuts and learned what goes into a first aid kit while the cubs looked at more things they can put in a first aid kit, cleaning and bandaging small cuts in different spots, treating bigger scrapes and minor burns, what might indicate an infection starting and learned how to use an epi pen. We always know they enjoyed the night when the cubs refuse to take all the bandages off until they get home leading to them having to explain to their parents at pick up time they aren’t actually hurt, it was just first aid night 🀣

Last week our scout troop, cub pack, and beaver colony on went hikes to explore spring flowers and plants. The hikes provided opportunities for learning plant identification and understanding the differences between edible and poisonous species. The groups were taught the importance of never eating something without asking an expert, highlighting the potential risks associated with improper identification or some plants that must be picked at specific times or only some parts of a plant being edible. It is always best to leave wild flowers and plants in their natural habitats. The beavers and cubs were thrilled to see a blue heron and two deer during their hike.

The 39th annual Can-Am Camporee at Camp Attawandaron proved to be a resounding success for our scout troop and cub pack, who braved the chilly nights and enjoyed a fantastic weekend from May 1-3. The Can-Am camp is always a highlight of our year.

In today's technology-driven world, having the ability to navigate using a map and compass is a vital skill. During their last meeting, our cubs dedicated time to learning these skills, successfully utilizing maps and compasses to navigate from Exeter United Church to Victoria Park and back.
