This Is not the Canada many newcomers hoped for.

A husband and father of three died after waiting more than 8 hours in an emergency room in Edmonton while suffering severe chest pain. His family says he never saw a doctor before he collapsed.

For many new Canadians, this kind of story is deeply unsettling.

In many cultures, families care for aging parents and sick loved ones at home. When someone is in pain, you don’t wait, you act. Many newcomers came to Canada believing that when a medical emergency happened, help would come quickly.

But too often now, families are left waiting… and worrying.

When emergency rooms are overcrowded and care is delayed, families are put in impossible positions, watching someone they love suffer, trusting the system will step in before it’s too late.

Canada’s healthcare system was built with good intentions, but it’s clear that relying only on taxpayer funding is no longer keeping up with demand. Reform is no longer optional.

Many countries allow private care options within a publicly funded system, so families can get timely treatment without paying out of pocket. This isn’t about abandoning universal care, it’s about making sure it actually works when families need it most.

New Canadians came here for safety, dignity, and a better future for their families.

All Canadians deserve a healthcare system that shows up in moments like this.
