Drive Safe This Easter Weekend
Easter is a time for family, food, and making memories not for roadside emergencies. With more people traveling this long weekend, let’s all do our part to keep the roads safe.

Top Easter Weekend Driving Tips:
✅ Don’t Drive Impaired: Whether it’s alcohol, cannabis, or fatigue, impaired is impaired. Plan ahead with a designated driver, rideshare, or taxi.
✅ Slow Down: Speeding reduces your reaction time and increases the chance of serious injury.
✅ Buckle Up, Every Time: A seatbelt can be the difference between life and death, no matter how short the drive.
✅ Avoid Distractions: Texting, eating, even daydreaming. All it takes is a second to lose focus.
✅ Rest Before the Trip: Driving tired is just as dangerous as driving drunk. Get enough sleep before hitting the road.

Did You Know?
Long weekends often see an increase in crashes. Let’s make this Easter weekend different and safer.

💛 Drive like your loved ones are on the road too.

🚘 Is it time to Switch to All-Seasons?

Spring is here, but don’t be too quick to swap out your winter tires! Weather here can be unpredictable, with cold mornings, late-season snow, and sudden temperature drops.

When Should You Change Your Tires?
✔️ Keep winter tires on until temperatures consistently stay above +7°C – Cold pavement can reduce traction.
✔️ Watch the forecast – April snowstorms aren’t uncommon!
✔️ Swap to all-seasons or summers once it’s truly spring.

🛞 Spring Tire Maintenance Tips:
🔹 Check tire pressure regularly – Tire pressure drops in cold and rises in heat. Underinflated or overinflated tires affect handling & fuel efficiency.
🔹 Look for pothole damage – Roads take a beating in winter, and deep potholes can cause tire bulges, cracks, or misalignment.
🔹 Rotate your tires – Uneven wear can lead to poor traction and handling.

Your tires are the only thing between you and the road. Drive smart, check your tires, and stay safe this spring!

🚧 Spring Means More Construction – Plan for Delays!

Expect lane closures, detours, and reduced speed zones as crews work to repair potholes, repave roads, and improve infrastructure.

How to Stay Safe in Work Zones:
🔹 Follow posted speed limits – Fines double in construction zones, even if workers aren’t present!
🔹 Stay alert & obey signage – Lane shifts and detours can change daily.
🔹 Watch for flaggers & workers – Road crews are working just feet away from traffic.
🔹 Keep a safe following distance – Sudden stops happen often in work zones.
🔹 Avoid distractions – Put away your phone, lower your music, and focus on the road.

Plan Ahead to Reduce Frustration:
✅ Check for road closures & delays before heading out.
✅ Give yourself extra travel time.
✅ Be patient & courteous – Everyone wants to get where they’re going safely. A few extra minutes won’t ruin your day!

Roadwork improves safety for everyone—let’s respect the crews working hard to keep our streets in good shape!

Speeding & Distracted Driving – A Deadly Combo!

Every second behind the wheel matters. Speeding and distracted driving are two of the leading causes of serious crashes in Alberta—and together, they’re even more dangerous. When you’re focused on a text, call, or even adjusting your GPS, you’re not focused on the road.

The Reality of Distracted Driving:
🚫 A quick glance at your phone while driving 50 km/h = driving blind for over 30 metres—the length of a school bus!
🚫 At 100 km/h, looking at your phone for just 5 seconds = the length of a football field without looking at the road.
🚫 Texting while driving makes you 23 times more likely to be involved in a collision.

Why Speeding Makes It Even Worse:
🔹 Higher speeds mean less reaction time – The faster you go, the harder it is to stop.
🔹 Stopping distances increase significantly – A car traveling at 60 km/h takes twice as long to stop compared to 30 km/h.
🔹 Crashes at high speeds are far more severe and the isk of serious injury or death.

🚧 Pothole Season is Here – Drive with Caution!

With the warmer temperatures, pothole season is in full swing! The freeze-thaw cycle wreaks havoc on roads, creating sudden dips, cracks, and deep potholes that can damage your vehicle or cause accidents.

⚠️ Why Are Potholes Dangerous?
✔️ Tire & Wheel Damage – Hitting a deep pothole at high speed can cause blowouts, bent rims, or alignment issues.
✔️ Loss of Control – Swerving suddenly to avoid a pothole can put you at risk of a collision.
✔️ Increased Stopping Distance – Bumpy roads affect braking and stability, making it harder to stop safely.

How to Stay Safe on Alberta’s Roads:
🔹 Slow down – Reducing speed gives you more time to react to potholes.
🔹 Leave extra following distance – This helps you see potholes ahead and avoid abrupt braking.
🔹 Scan the road ahead – Be especially cautious in areas where potholes commonly form, like intersections and busier roads.
🔹 Hold the wheel firmly – If you must hit a pothole, grip the steering wheel to maintain control and avoid sudden swerving.
🔹 Report major potholes – Help your community by reporting large potholes to your local municipality.
🔹 Hit a pothole? Check your tires and suspension for damage, and if needed, pull over safely to assess.

Spring is here, but smooth roads aren’t guaranteed—drive carefully and stay aware!

Sun Glare Can Be Dangerous – Drive Smart! 😎

With longer daylight hours in spring, morning and evening sun glare can create blinding conditions while driving. This glare can make it difficult to see traffic lights, pedestrians, cyclists, and even other vehicles, increasing the risk of collisions.

Why Is Sun Glare a Hazard?
☀️ Reduces visibility – The sun’s reflection on wet or icy roads can be dangerously bright.
☀️ Makes it harder to judge distances – Glare can distort perception, making it tough to gauge the speed of oncoming traffic.
☀️ Increases reaction time – Sudden sun exposure after coming around a bend can momentarily blind drivers.
☀️ Causes eye strain – Squinting for long periods can lead to fatigue and slower response times.

How to Reduce Sun Glare Risks:
✔️ Wear polarized sunglasses – These lenses help reduce glare and improve contrast for clearer vision.
✔️ Use your sun visor effectively – Adjust it to block direct sunlight while keeping a clear view of the road.
✔️ Keep your windshield clean – Streaks, dust, and grime scatter sunlight, making glare even worse. Clean both inside and outside regularly!
✔️ Slow down & increase following distance – If visibility is reduced, give yourself more time to react to sudden stops.
✔️ Turn on headlights – This makes your vehicle more visible to others, especially during sunrise and sunset.
✔️ Plan your route & timing – If possible, adjust travel times to avoid driving directly into the sun during peak glare hours.

Spring sunshine is great—but not when it blinds you on the road! Take these precautions and drive with care.

Share the Road with Cyclists & Pedestrians!

As the weather warms up, more cyclists, runners, and pedestrians will be out enjoying roads and pathways. Let’s all do our part to keep them safe!

Drivers – Your Responsibility:
✔️ Give cyclists at least 1 metre of space when passing—and 1.5 metres if you are driving 60 km/h or faster.
✔️ Check your blind spots before turning or changing lanes, especially for cyclists riding near the curb.
✔️ Yield to pedestrians at crosswalks and intersections—stop fully and make sure they’ve cleared your lane before proceeding.
✔️ Be patient—cyclists and pedestrians have the right to use the road too.
✔️ Stay alert! Avoid distractions like texting, eating, or adjusting the radio while driving.

Cyclists & Pedestrians – Stay Safe Too!
✔️ Cyclists: ride predictably and obey traffic signals—don’t weave between lanes or ignore stop signs.
✔️ Pedestrians: cross at marked crosswalks whenever possible and stay visible, especially at dawn or dusk.
✔️ Wear bright or reflective clothing and use lights when out at night to make yourself easier to see.

A little extra caution goes a long way. Respect all road users & make our roads safer for everyone! 🚦

Watch for Changing Road Conditions! 🌦️❄️

March in Alberta means warmer, but don’t be fooled—winter isn’t over yet! Mornings can still bring icy, unpredictable road conditions.

Hazards to watch for:
✔️ Black ice on bridges, overpasses & shaded areas – it’s dangerously slick!
✔️ Melting snow can refreeze overnight, turning roads into skating rinks by morning.
✔️ Fog & spring storms reduce visibility, making it harder to see other vehicles, cyclists, or pedestrians.
✔️ Potholes & road damage that appear as ice melts.

Stay Safe on Alberta’s Roads:
✅ Slow down and adjust your speed to match the conditions.
✅ Leave extra space between you and the vehicle ahead.
✅ Check the forecast before heading out, and be prepared for sudden weather changes.
✅ Make sure your tires are in good shape—winter tires are still your best bet until conditions fully improve.

Spring may be on the way, but Alberta’s roads still demand your full attention! Let’s keep each other safe.
