On this date, 110 years ago.

In June 1916, the Germans had breached through the Canadian line at Sanctuary Wood. When the 49th Battalion (E.R.) was rushed forward to counter-attack, Lieutenant Frank Scott Winser went out in broad daylight under extremely heavy fire before the main assault to reconnoitre the ground.

His great gallantry, coolness and courage not only assisted the commanding officer but inspired all ranks that day. He was soon after wounded and later awarded the Military Cross by the King.

The medals are now part of the 49th Battalion Memorial Collection at the Regimental museum.

En juin 1916, les Allemands avaient percé les lignes canadiennes à Sanctuary Wood. Lorsque le 49e Bataillon (Edmonton Regiment) fut envoyé en urgence pour contre-attaquer, le lieutenant Frank Scott Winser s'avança en plein jour, sous un feu extrêmement nourri, avant l'assaut principal afin de reconnaître le terrain.

Son remarquable sang-froid, son courage et sa bravoure contribuèrent non seulement à aider son commandant, mais inspirèrent également tous les rangs ce jour-là. Peu après, il fut blessé et reçut par la suite la Croix militaire (Military Cross) des mains du Roi.

Ses médailles font aujourd'hui partie de la Collection commémorative du 49e Bataillon conservée au musée régimentaire.

Thomas James Swift joined the 49th Battalion (E.R.) in Flanders in late May 1916. Days later, the Germans attacked the Canadian trenches at Sanctuary Wood, Ypres, and the 49th Battalion (E.R.) were called forward to retake the lost trenches.

Counter-attacking alone, in broad daylight and unsupported by artillery fire, the men were massacred. The survivors continued the fight through the trenches throughout June 3rd and 4th until relieved at midnight.

More than half the battalion would be wiped out during the fighting at Sanctuary Wood. Thomas James Swift was reported missing following the action, with no known grave he is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial.

His original identity disc and medals were held for many years by the family until now being preserved as part of the 49th Battalion Memorial Collection at the Regimental museum.

Sa plaque d’identité originale ainsi que ses médailles ont été conservées pendant de nombreuses années par sa famille. Elles sont désormais préservées au sein de la Collection commémorative du 49e Bataillon au musée régimentaire.

Today across the battlefields of France and Flanders, Member of the Association & the Zach McCormack run/ruck club, Joe MacDonald completed a 100 kilometre run in support of the 49th Battalion (E.R.) European Monument Fund.

The run, which took 18 hours to complete, has raised more than $10,000 to date. On behalf of the Association, we extend our sincere thanks to everyone who donated, shared the fundraiser, offered encouragement, or supported the project in any way.

Come on your own, bring a friend, or bring the whole family and leave with a few more friends than you arrived with. Our June pub night coincides with the anniversary of the Avion Raid, fought near Vimy Ridge in 1917 by the 49th Battalion (Edmonton Regiment).

111 years ago today, the 49th Battalion (Edmonton Regiment) departed for overseas. Of the original battalion, less than 20% would be on strength upon the Regiment's return in 1919. Lest we Forget.

Today, on the 82nd anniversary of the Breakthrough of the Hi**er Line south of Pontecorvo and Aquino on May 23, 1944, we remember the countless Canadian soldiers who lost their lives during this fierce single day offensive.

For the 2nd Canadian Infantry Brigade, which led the assault, it was the most intense and costly day of combat it would endure during the war. The Loyal Edmonton Regiment suffered devastating losses, with casualty rates reaching roughly 75 percent. By the end of the battle, only 161 all ranks remained in fighting strength, and ‘A’ Company had been left without a single officer. During the battle, the units Commanding Officer, Lt. Col. R.C. Coleman MC, was shot through the leg and hand, despite this he continued to lead the regiment forward.

Aujourd’hui, à l’occasion du 82e anniversaire de la percée de la Ligne Hi**er au sud de Pontecorvo et d’Aquino, le 23 mai 1944, nous nous souvenons des innombrables soldats canadiens qui ont perdu la vie lors de cette offensive acharnée d’une seule journée.

Pour la 2e Brigade d’infanterie canadienne, qui a mené l’assaut, il s’agissait de la journée de combat la plus intense et la plus coûteuse qu’elle ait connue pendant la guerre. Le Loyal Edmonton Regiment a subi des pertes dévastatrices, avec un taux de pertes d’environ 75 %. À la fin de la bataille, il ne restait que 161 hommes aptes au combat, et la compagnie ‘A’ n’avait plus aucun officier. Au cours de la bataille, le commandant du régiment, le lieutenant-colonel R.C.
