Workplaces continue to see instances of exclusion and discrimination, and many employees still face racism in their day-to-day experience. Awareness helps us see the problem. Action is what changes it.

•A recent global survey by Catalyst found that 66% of employees from racialized or ethnically marginalised groups reported having experienced racism at work during their career, and 52% said they’d faced it in their current job.
•In Canada, a Statistics Canada survey covering 2021 to 2024 found that 41% of racialized people who experienced discrimination said it occurred in the workplace.
•Among Black Canadians surveyed in early 2025 by KPMG in Canada, 77% reported experiencing microaggressions, discrimination, or acts of racism at work in the past year.

Racism does not disappear with awareness alone. It requires action, accountability, and systems that support equity, not just statements that promise it.

Inclusive language is not complicated, but the myths around it sure are. Here’s what people often get wrong.

Myth: Inclusive language is about being politically correct.
Fact: It is about being respectful, accurate, and not unintentionally excluding people.

Myth: It slows communication down.
Fact: It improves clarity. When people feel seen and respected, communication becomes smoother, not slower.

Myth: It means you can’t say anything anymore.
Fact: You can say plenty. You just avoid words that harm, stereotype, or shrink someone’s identity. Low effort, big impact.

Myth: It is only needed in HR meetings.
Fact: It matters everywhere. Hangar floor, briefing room, team huddle, office chat. Culture lives in daily conversations.

Quick pulse check:
• Who gets heard the most?
• Who gets heard the least?
• Who’s missing from the conversation entirely?

Inclusion isn’t a policy. It’s what happens in everyday moments; meetings, decisions, teamwork, tone. If people do not feel safe or seen, the culture isn’t inclusive, no matter what the posters say. 👀
