I'm helping to spread the word about this peaceful protest in Calgary, Alberta, on Friday, September 19th at the Mc Dougal Centre from 2-8pm. Rain or shine. Disability rights are human rights!!!!

https://www.facebook.com/events/1296881985402987

"This is to support disability rights and condemn Alberta govt's changes to A.I.S.H., claw-backs to A.I.S.H., and claw-backs to disability rights in Alberta.
A Die-in is a peaceful protest where folks lie down to take up space & "play dead" to simulate the gravity of a situation.
Would love to get as many people out as possible and media coverage."

Post written by an SAF member:

Ten years ago, when I was first getting involved with the SAF and disability advocacy, I had the opportunity to join Edmonton-McClung MLA Lorne Dach and Timothy Maxwell from MightyWheels on a accessibility walk around an apartment complex in the area. Timothy had concerns with the lack of accessibility for folks with mobility aides.

Time went on, and I actually ended up moving into that apartment complex. Unfortunately, nothing was ever done to resolve the issue. For ten years I watched as people with mobility aides were forced to use the road in order to get to the shopping centre from the complex.

This year, I started the process of getting a walker. I had the opportunity to try using a walker that belonged to a friend's mom. I finally had the opportunity to walk the route with a mobility aide. The result only added fuel to my fire.

So, I sent an email to my MLA, Lorne, my City Councillor, and Boardwalk. I also made a maintenance request with my apartment complex. I figured it was a fruitless effort, but I needed to try.

Well, today, I walked to the shopping centre, and they've finally added off ramps on the path. There's still one more they need to attend to, but after ten years of advocacy, change finally happened.

This post isn't meant to make me look good, or a way for me to gloat. This post is meant to be a message of hope for the disability community.

No matter how discouraged you feel, no matter how hard it may be to constantly have to advocate for what you care about. Don't ever give up, because you never know who is listening. You never know who might hear you and help you make change happen.

"Good, better, best. Never let it rest. 'Til your good is better and your better is best." - St. Jerome

An Alberta coalition wants to hear how the new $200 monthly Canada Disability Benefit could be a game-changer for you. They're collecting personal stories to show how this money can help bridge the gap between provincial support and the poverty line, offering a ray of hope for a better future.

đź“… Deadline: June 20, 2025

1. The Government of Canada created a monthly payment for Canadians with disabilities who have the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) called the Canada Disability Benefit (CDB). The payments will start in July for those who can get it. The Government of Alberta plans to take the $200 off of AISH cheques from those who get the CDB. AB is the only province to clawback the CDB. How does this make you feel? Is there anything else you would like to share with the Government of Alberta about this decision?

2. How would an extra $200/month help make you life better?
