Today is International Clinical Trials Day and in Alberta, there's a lot to celebrate.

Clinical trials are where tomorrow's cancer care begins. They give patients access to promising treatments today, while helping researchers and clinicians pursue bold ideas, and bring new therapies to the people who need them most.

Last year, Alberta had 221 active cancer clinical trials, 72 new cancer clinical trials launched and 972 Albertans who participated these studies.

These numbers highlight Alberta as a leader in cancer clinical trial activity in Canada.

But numbers are just one part of the story. The reason this work matters so deeply is best said by the people closest to it.

"As a new doctor, I was told we may treat 5,000 patients throughout our career, but one positive clinical trial can help hundreds of thousands of patients. I think that's one of the reasons why I like clinical trials — it offers that hope for a greater proportion of patients and advances the science of treating cancer." - Dr. Randeep Sangha, Oncologist & Director of the Cross Cancer Institute Clinical Trials Unit

Cancer progress doesn’t happen on its own. That's why we are proud to support every single cancer clinical trial in Alberta — to give Albertans more hope and more time.

Exciting news for cancer care in Alberta!

Today, it was announced that Alberta is lowering the breast cancer screening age to 40 without a referral, starting April 1, 2027. This is a meaningful step toward earlier diagnosis and better outcomes across our province.

With 1 in 7 Albertan women facing a breast cancer diagnosis in their lifetime, access to earlier detection can make all the difference.

“Breast cancer is now over 90% survivable when caught early, so rapid detection is the most powerful defense we have against this disease. Expanding access to women at age 40 provides a critical head start toward earlier treatment and a successful recovery. This is a powerful step forward that directly improves the outcomes for cancer patients and their families.”
Wendy Beauchesne, CEO, Alberta Cancer Foundation

We’re also excited to see the introduction of a new oncofertility program, supporting patients of reproductive age through complex decisions during cancer care.
Progress like this is reshaping the future of cancer care for Albertans.

Tonight is Toast of the Town! An event dedicated to honouring the generosity of Edmontonians, while raising funds to advance cancer care at the Cross Cancer Institute.

Earlier this year, we sat down with Barrie Stafford to hear the story behind this incredible event. It all began over a cup of coffee, and six guys who cared deeply about their community asked themselves: what more can we do to support Albertans facing cancer?

From that one conversation, Toast of the Town was born.
Each year, they honour a champion making great changes in the community. This year, that individual is long time philanthropist and community leader, Terry O’Flynn.

Thank you to the Cure Cancer Foundation, and everyone participating in this event. We are grateful for your support and look forward to seeing the continued impact of your generosity within our community.

Canderel, thank you. 💜

This year, Défi Canderel hosted not one but two events in support of the Alberta Cancer Foundation. The 2nd Annual Canderel Superhero Dash YYC welcomed participants of all ages to run, walk, dash, and fly alongside their favourite heroes, fictional and frontline alike. And separately, their pickleball tournament, the Big Dill Invitational brought even more of their community together in support of Albertans facing cancer.

Between both events, Canderel and their community raised over $88,000 in support of Alberta-based cancer research, helping fuel breakthroughs in how we detect and treat cancer, right here at home.

Thank you to everyone who made both events possible – we look forward to the future of this partnership!

We asked the players of one question…

“Who do you play for?”

Their answers remind us of something simple and true: we all know someone facing cancer. 💜

This Friday, the Stick it to Cancer hockey game raises funds to advance cancer care right here in Alberta.

We’re grateful for their commitment to creating more hope, more moments for Albertans facing cancer. 👏
