A newly restored harpsichord arrives in Jasper today!! 😯🎶

This afternoon at 2:00 PM, Early Music Alberta presents a special concert at Jasper Baptist Church featuring harpsichordist Tammy-Jo Mortensen performing on a beautifully restored historical-style harpsichord.

Fresh from restoration, the instrument brings brilliance, colour, and rhythmic vitality to the music of the baroque era. Unlike the modern piano, the harpsichord creates sound by plucking its strings, producing a shimmering clarity that shaped the music of composers like Scarlatti and Telemann.

Paired with Josephine van Lier’s extraordinary 1725 baroque cello, the result is a sound world that feels vivid, intimate, and alive.

The program includes works by Bononcini, Scarlatti, Dall’Abaco, Cervetto, Amadei, and Telemann.

Today in Jasper: hear the voice of a 300-year-old cello!! 😯

This afternoon at 2:00 PM, Early Music Alberta invites you to Jasper Baptist Church for a rare opportunity to hear Josephine van Lier perform on her remarkable 1725 baroque cello. 🎶

Unlike most historical instruments, this cello has never been modernized. It still carries its original proportions and is played with gut strings, allowing audiences to hear the warm, intimate sound world composers like Telemann and Bononcini would have known centuries ago.

There is something deeply human about the sound of a baroque cello — expressive, resonant, and close enough to feel like a voice speaking directly to you.

Joined by Tammy-Jo Mortensen on harpsichord, the program features music by Bononcini, Scarlatti, Dall’Abaco, Cervetto, Amadei, and Telemann.

With some sun in the forecast for Jasper tomorrow 🌄, it could be a beautiful day to head into the mountains and take in a truly special concert!!

Early Music Alberta returns to Jasper Baptist Church tomorrow, Sunday, May 24 at 2:00 PM for Baroque Cello & Harpsichord: A 300-Year-Old Voice in Jasper.

This concert features Josephine van Lier on her rare 1725 baroque cello, an instrument that has never been modernized and still carries the warm, intimate voice audiences would have known 300 years ago. Paired with Tammy-Jo Mortensen on a restored harpsichord, the program offers a chance to hear music as it might once have breathed: close, resonant, and alive.

Featuring music by Bononcini, Scarlatti, Dall’Abaco, Cervetto, Amadei, and Telemann.

Today’s rehearsal in Jasper… 🎶

The cello and harpsichord are settling beautifully into Jasper Baptist Church, and tomorrow afternoon we get to share this remarkable sound world with you. ✨

Join Early Music Alberta on Sunday, May 24 at 2:00 PM for Baroque Cello & Harpsichord: A 300-Year-Old Voice in Jasper.

Josephine van Lier will perform on her extraordinary 1725 baroque cello, an instrument that has never been modernized and still sings with original gut strings. She is joined by Tammy-Jo Mortensen on a beautifully restored harpsichord, bringing together two instruments with stories, character, and voices all their own.

With music by Bononcini, Scarlatti, Dall’Abaco, Cervetto, Amadei, and Telemann, this will be an intimate afternoon of early music in the mountains.

And then came the Fandango. 😯💃🎆 Unforgettable!!

Boccherini’s Guitar Quintet No. 4 in D Major, G. 448 “Fandango” closed the evening with exactly the kind of energy people were still talking about days later — fiery, rhythmic, exhilarating, and so full of life that it left the room absolutely glowing. ✨

Performed by all five musicians — Lucas Harris, Keith Hamm, Yeeun Ha, Gabriele Thielmann-Vriend, and Josephine van Lier — it was, by every account, one of those performances that felt truly special: magical, unforgettable, explosive, beautiful — and for many, the best yet!! 💛

From the gentle Pastorale to the thrilling final surge of the famous Fandango, it was the kind of ending that stays with you.

Paganini’s Guitar Quartet No. 15 in A minor, MS 42 was another unforgettable moment in last Friday’s concert. 🥰

This unique work, scored for viola (Keith Hamm), violin (Yeeun Ha), cello (Josephine van Lier), and guitar (Lucas Harris), created a sound world that felt intimate, rich, and full of life. The viola held a wonderful place at the centre of the texture, and the whole ensemble played with such vitality and connection!

It was one of those performances where every detail seemed to land, and the energy in the room was palpable.

People kept telling us afterward how incredible the whole evening had been — and how vividly it stayed with them in the days that followed.

One of the real discoveries of last Friday’s concert was Paganini’s Terzetto Concertante in D Major, MS 114 — a vibrant and unusual work for the rare trio of viola, guitar, and cello. 🤩

Performed by Keith Hamm (baroque viola), Lucas Harris (baroque guitar), and Josephine van Lier (violoncello piccolo), this piece gave us one of the most distinctive sound worlds of the evening: warm, lively, and full of character!

No violin — and yet so much brilliance, colour, and imagination. ✨🎶 It was one of those moments that reminded us just how inventive Paganini’s chamber music could be.

Paganini’s Caprice No. 20 in D Major (Allegretto) brought a completely different energy to last Friday’s concert, performed with brilliance and character by Gabriele Thielmann-Vriend. ✨

With its rustic drive and striking spirit, it offered a vivid contrast to the lyrical elegance heard earlier in the evening. Performed on baroque violin, it had wonderful immediacy and sparkle — one of those moments that made people lean in and listen even more closely. 🌟

The response after the concert was extraordinary, with so many audience members still talking about the details days later!

One of the delights of last Friday’s concert was hearing Lucas Harris perform Paganini’s Sonatina No. 4 in C Major, MS 85 for solo guitar. 🥰🎶

This piece offered such a lovely glimpse into Paganini’s more intimate musical world — elegant, poised, and beautifully shaped. It reminded us that beyond the legendary violin virtuoso was also a composer deeply devoted to the guitar.
