Chinatown research from five countries, in one room. Come and hear it, and bring your own.

Researchers from Edmonton, Toronto, Montreal, Manitoba, London, Barcelona, Milan and Kolkata are presenting on Chinatown heritage, placemaking, entrepreneurship, housing and the visitor economy, in the same rooms as the fireside chats. There are more than twenty peer-reviewed sessions across the four days.

A few of them:
Christine Van Winkle, Professor at the University of Manitoba, on twenty years of asking whether festivals actually work: research with more than 30 festivals, and current work on the role of events in disaster recovery.

Dr. Andrea Del Bono, Università degli Studi di Bergamo, on placemaking in Milan’s Zona Sarpi and Prato. Italy has two Chinatowns.
Mingqing Yin, Universitat de Barcelona, on consumption and community invisibility in Barcelona’s Chinese neighbourhood.

Dr. Henry Tsang, Athabasca University. Elaine Yip 葉曉菱, Edmonton Heritage Council. Dr. Paul Boniface Akaabre, University of Alberta.

If you work in a university, this is your conference too. Student delegates are $275 with valid ID.

The building is the canvas.

Lance Cardinal, artist and designer of Soulflame, gives a Sunday spotlight at the International Chinatown Conference.

A First Nations (2-Spirit) artist, designer, entrepreneur and television personality from the Bigstone Cree Nation in Treaty 8 territory, with a thirty-year career in the arts.

His murals stand in the buildings Edmontonians already use — Telus World of Science, Re/Max Field, the Edmonton Public Library, MacEwan University, Grande Prairie Hospital. His mural for Avenue Living’s Sunrise tower — “The Land We Share”, 379.01 square metres — holds the Guinness World Record for the largest solar panel artwork in the world, ratified 27 May 2025. He made it to honour the neighbourhood’s First Nations and Chinese cultures: the two histories that share that ground in Edmonton. He is the Indigenous consultant and designer for the Edmonton Oilers, wrote their pre-game land acknowledgement video and designed the Turtle Island logo, and designed the medals for Canada’s World Rugby Sevens Series in Edmonton in 2021.

His Kunitz Shoes collection sold out in two days and raised money for the MMIWG movement, and is now in the collection of the Royal Alberta Museum. His children’s programme Indigenous Art Adventures is in its second season on APTN and won a Canadian Screen Award for best children’s series.

Every Chinatown in the room is arguing about its buildings — what to keep, what to fill, what to put on the wall facing the street. Bring the question about your own walls.
