"Wood" You Believe What Kids Can Build?

On December 14, we had another “Explore 4H” meeting, at a volunteer’s house. I chose to build a shelf, but I also could have chosen to build a chair, or book ends. I found building to be pretty easy, since all I had to do was screw it together, along with some minor sanding. This only took me 1 hour and 30 minutes, so I had a bit of free time. (The meeting was 3 hours long). The shelf turned out really nice, and fits well in my bedroom. R. had chosen to build a portable chair, which involved a bit more work. I helped him build a part of it, and also fitted it. Once most people were finished, Trevor brought out a wood burner, to burn our names into the projects. Overall, this was a very fun event. It also made me consider joining Trevor's wood working class next year. I can’t wait for the next “Explore 4H” event.

"Sleighing" Public Speaking!

On December 7, our club had our Annual Christmas Party/Communications Workshop. The day was divided in 2, with the first 3 hours being the communication workshop, and the last 3 hours being the party. The workshop was hosted by one of our leaders, Megan. We first started out with a few icebreakers and team building games. One of them involved describing a symbol to another person so they could draw it. My team did not do well, and we drew some strange things! Afterwards, we learned about public speaking. We covered gestures, speech topics, and much more. We also had a few more games, which served to better improve our speaking and impromptus. Sadly, I was unable to make the christmas party, but I heard it was great. Overall, this was a fun and informative event that served to better my public speaking skills.

Navigating Fun!

On November 30, we had our second Outdoor Pursuits meeting off the year, at Goldbar Park in Capilano. Our group was doing orienteering, which is the sport of finding your own path to different waypoints. Once we got a brief demonstration on how the electronics worked, we were off. We raced across the entire park, also trying to get one step ahead. However, my group made some mistakes, and we eventually came in third place. At least we beat the Cleavers. Overall, this was a lot of fun, and it provided a lot of challenge. I would love to do this again.

Learn to Do by Doing!

On Saturday, November 29, we had our second “Explore 4H” meeting. Our project was focused around home renovation, so wiring and building. Our first task was to cut the wood to size. We then gathered the planks, and built a frame. Once we had finished screwing the frame together, we attached the drywall to it by way of special “drywall screws." The next step was to wire the whole thing. Overall, a fun but difficult project.

Rooted in Tradition!

On Saturday, November 9, part of our 4H group attended Farmfair International. Farm Fair is a large event that takes place annually at the Edmonton Expo Center. It primarily revolves around farm related topics, hence the name.

After a small speech, we went into our first breakout rooms. Me and Mom went to the Canine course. I thought it would be the same as last year, but I was very wrong. Instead of jumps and weaves, we were greeted by a police dog, which among other tricks, demonstrated biting a suspect to the crowd. It was very interesting to watch, but I would never want to own one of those police dogs, since they had no manners. The event was hosted in partnership with a charity, which helped find new homes for these dogs after retirement. I imagine they would be quite the handful!

There was also a draw for a scavenger hunt. I got a nice hat! We also received a gift bag, which included some awesome treats. This was a really fun event and I can't wait to go next year.

Igniting Adventure: Outdoor Pursuits!

On October 26, we had our first outdoor pursuits meeting at Jackie Parker Park. Jackie Parker Park, named after a famed Edmonton football star, is a large park that includes an off leash area and a small lake.

We set up at one of the campfires for our meeting. Our first activity was to start our own individual fires in the large fire pit. We had each brought a different type of fire starter, so this would be a test of our capabilities. In the end, my fire was the largest, mainly because of my scout training, Moms help and that I positioned my fire so that it would be protected from the wind.

Afterwards, we roasted some marshmallows over the largest fires. Then we had a small craft, where we built little “view finders” to identify local nature, although the critters seemed to avoid our cameras.

Shutter Speed Superstars!

On October 19, 2025, we had our first “explore 4H” meeting. Our meeting, which was dedicated to photography, took place at a park on the grounds of the Alberta legislature.

Our first lesson was on lens length. By changing the length of a lens, we could zoom in or zoom out, allowing us to take better pictures. After a demonstration, we practiced with each other. I got to use Steve’s camera, since it was much better than my phone. We took some pretty goofy pictures too!

Overall this was a really fun event and I am looking forward to more “Explore 4H” activities in the future.
