Our Story

When Troy Chandler was diagnosed with hydrocephalus at 28 years old, he knew nothing about the condition or what it meant for his future. This sparked a journey for Troy and his wife Annette, that led to the creation of an event that raises awareness and provides support to those living with spina bifida and hydrocephalus in our community. After being diagnosed with a complex

neurological condition, Troy Chandler made it his mission to create a supportive community here in Sault Ste. Marie for people with spina bifida and hydrocephalus. Troy and his wife Annette held the first Troy's Trail event 11 years ago, and since then have joined together many families touched by the conditions. Troy's Trail Sault Ste. Marie is an Annual Spirit Walk that we organized and in 2012. The walk is a community event held down by Clergue Park by the waterfront. It is a place to come and meet with other people who share similar experiences, and bring them together for mutual support, encouragement, comfort, information and positive feedback. We are committed to reaching out and making a positive difference in the lives of individuals and families who are living with the daily challenges brought on by this serious disabling condition. Feeling a sense of community (physical and emotional well-being) is essential in providing personal growth, closer inter-personal relationships, and increased self-esteem. Therefore one-on-one personal support is encouraged between individuals with similar experiences to share coping strategies. CHARITY # 10799 9310 RR0001

Hello everyone. Someone from the group is missing an umbrella from Saturday. It has dogs on it, and was near the front entrance area. If you may have found it, please shoot us a message. Thanks.🙂

Chandler welcomed at least two new participants – both youngsters with hydrocephalus – to the 15th annual Troy’s Trail Spirit Wheel Walk Run held Saturday at Art Gallery of Algoma to benefit Hydrocephalus Canada.

They joined about 80 others – the most since before the COVID-19 pandemic – for the waterfront jaunt to Ronald A. Irwin Civic Centre.

Chandler told participants “it’s always a win” when the fundraiser draws new walkers.

He wanted Troy’s Trail to offer ongoing support for Sault Ste. Marie residents with hydrocephalus and spina bifida and raise awareness about the conditions.

“Sometimes we have a lot of questions or need a shoulder to lean on or even just to vent,” Chandler told the crowd before the walk started. He learned he had hydrocephalus when he was 28, but knew nothing about the condition that can be “frustrating and scary at times.”

“No one here in the Sault needs to go alone anymore,” said Chandler. “Together we are making a difference one person, one family at a time.”

The walk also got a boost to its bottom-line with a four-figure donation from an anonymous group. The unknown benefactor “recognized what we were doing, wanted to recognize what we were doing, thank us and to make sure we keep going because we’re doing a good job.” Chandler told The Sault Star.

The amount raised at the walk was not available.
