Cape Breton University’s feasibility study for “light rail” (really commuter rail) in Sydney has been published, and its conclusion is clear - this project is feasible, and with funding from all levels of government, could be built using largely existing rail lines and be operating in 3 years. So now the question is, will the Province and federal governments step up to help make this happen?

In June 2024, the Government of Nova Scotia and Cape Breton University commissioned a feasibility study to explore the potential…

Regional air service in the Maritimes is set for a resurgence, with the provinces of NS, NB and PEI coming together with the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency to fund PAL Airlines service in the region. This will restore regular flights between Halifax and Moncton, Fredericton, Charlottetown and Sydney, as well as between Fredericton and Moncton. This will add back in badly needed connections in the region, especially with Halifax growing as a hub for national and international flights.

Link Nova Scotia (formerly the Joint Regional Transportation Agency) has released their long-awaited regional transportation plan, and the government of NS has also provided their response. The plan has a lot of excellent ideas for drastically improving the transportation landscape in Nova Scotia, including expanded inter-municipal transit options, more ferries, and options for LRT and regional passenger rail service. Now the real question, what action will the government take to make these improvements a reality?

You can read through the plan and the government response here:

Effective August 1, 2025, the Government of Canada is making ferry travel in the Maritimes more affordable.

Thanks to this initiative, Bay Ferries and Northumberland Ferries will be offering a 50% fare reduction on services between Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. This initiative will make ferry travel more affordable and accessible for everyone. We’re pleased to pass these savings on to our customers.

This includes a 50% reduction on:
-Vehicle fares
-Passenger and foot passenger fares
-Commercial fares
-Fuel surcharges

No action is required; reduced fares will be automatically applied to all new reservations and same-day purchases as of August 1.

Already booked for travel on or after August 1? You will automatically receive a 50% refund on your fare, returned to your original method of payment by August 31.

For 2024 NFL Frequent Traveller Booklets, unused passes as of August 1 will be refunded based on the original purchase price. Single passes used for travel on or after August 1 will be refunded 50% of their original value.

We recognize that some customers who travelled prior to August 1 may be disappointed. As this is a time-bound initiative introduced by the Government of Canada, only travel occurring on or after August 1, 2025 is eligible. Refunds cannot be issued for earlier travel.

Big news for Atlantic Canada today - the Federal government is following through on a campaign promise to reduce the costs of travel between provinces in the region, cutting the toll on the Confederation Bridge, and reducing passenger fares by 50% on federally funded ferries in the region. That includes ferries to PEI, Digby NS - Saint John NB, and Marine Atlantic ferries to Newfoundland. The reduced fares will go into effect August 1, 2025. TAA has long been advocating for fair ferry rates, especially to Newfoundland, so we're very pleased to see the government follow through on this promise - and in short order, to boot!
