🌊 **COASTAL SAFETY NOTICE | SHIPS POINT** 🚒

Heads up, neighbours!

A large ocean phenomenon known as a **Kelvin wave** is expected to reach the B.C. coast around mid-October.

Unlike a tsunami, a Kelvin wave doesn't crash ashore. Instead, it can gradually raise ocean levels, potentially increasing the risk of coastal flooding when combined with high tides, strong winds or storms.

**A little preparation goes a long way!**

✅ Keep an eye on coastal weather alerts and tides.

✅ Secure items near the shoreline.

✅ Keep drainage areas clear.

✅ Have an emergency plan and supplies ready.

✅ Stay clear of flooded roads and shorelines.

The local impact is still uncertain, but being informed and prepared is always our best defence.

🚒 Why does a new fire truck cost $2.5 MILLION?

This isn’t just an American problem.

Here in Canada, the cost of replacing fire apparatus has climbed dramatically. A new pumper can now approach or exceed $1 million, while a modern aerial/ladder truck can reach $2.5 million or more.

These aren’t ordinary trucks. They are highly specialized emergency vehicles carrying sophisticated pumps, water systems, communications, safety equipment and, in the case of aerial apparatus, massive engineered ladder systems designed to operate safely under extreme conditions.

Add long manufacturing timelines, inflation, exchange rates and the specialized equipment firefighters require, and the numbers add up very quickly.

For small and rural fire departments, these costs are particularly significant. The equipment we rely on to protect our communities represents an enormous investment, and thoughtful planning, maintenance and community support matter more than ever.

Boil Water Advisory in place for Ships Point Effective Immediately.

Due to a water pressure issue affecting chlorine levels our water operator has issued a boil water advisory while they work to correct the problem.

Bring water to a rolling boil for at least 3 minutes before using for consumption and cooking. We will post further updates on the Spid website and pages.
