Future Generations Foundation The purpose of the Future Generations Foundation is to help First Nations people and communities.

Today the NIB Trust Fund supports education programs aimed at healing, reconciliation, and knowledge building. Funds are available to First Nation and Métis individuals and organizations through a competitive application process. The goal of the NIB Trust Fund is to help First Nations and Métis people, organizations, and communities address the long-lasting impacts of the Indian residential school

📢 We have great news!

The Future Generations Foundation has successfully obtained approval of amendments to the Terms and Conditions of the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement (IRSSA) governing the administration of residual settlement funds.

These amendments remove longstanding restrictions and provide:
✔ Greater flexibility to respond to community priorities
✔ Stronger alignment with First Nations-led decision-making
✔ Increased autonomy and trust in how funds are governed and allocated

These changes represent an important step forward in ensuring resources can be used more effectively to support First Nations communities now and for generations to come.

La Fondation des générations à venir a réussi à faire approuver des modifications aux modalités de la Convention de règlement relative aux pensionnats indiens (CRRPI) régissant l’administration des fonds résiduels du règlement.

Ces modifications suppriment des restrictions de longue date et prévoient :
✔ Plus de flexibilité pour répondre aux priorités communautaires
✔ Une plus grande harmonisation avec les processus décisionnels dirigés par les Premières Nations
✔ Une autonomie et une confiance accrues par rapport à la gestion et à l’octroi des fonds

Success Story Spotlight: Michelle Throassie

Michelle Throassie, a proud member of Black Lake First Nation, is pursuing a degree in Indigenous Social Work at the First Nations University of Canada with support from a Future Generations Foundation Scholarship.

As a single mother of two, Michelle balances her education with caregiving responsibilities. This scholarship helps ease financial pressures, including daycare and speech therapy costs, so she can focus on achieving her goals.

Fière membre de la Première Nation de Black Lake, Michelle Throassie étudie en vue d’obtenir un baccalauréat en travail social auprès des populations autochtones à l’Université des Premières Nations du Canada grâce à une bourse de la Fondation des générations à venir.

Cette mère monoparentale concilie aujourd’hui ses cours et l’éducation de ses deux enfants. La bourse permet d’alléger le fardeau financier de Michelle, notamment en couvrant les frais de garde et d’orthophonie pour son plus jeune enfant, ce qui l’aide à se concentrer sur l’obtention de son diplôme.

Language is more than words—it is identity, culture, history, and connection.

Through the Next Generation Project, the Délı̨nę Got’ı̨nę Government is preserving the voices and knowledge of fluent Sahtúot’ı̨nę Elders by recording stories, teachings, and language for future generations. Using land-based learning, digital archives, and innovative language tools, the project is helping reconnect youth to their culture while supporting healing from the lasting impacts of Residential Schools.

Building on the success of this work, their Community Connections Project is creating new opportunities for youth and Elders to come together through language learning, storytelling, traditional drumming, hand games, and community gatherings. The project also supports the restoration of Délı̨nę’s local cemetery, honouring survivors and ancestors while strengthening intergenerational connections.

Together, these initiatives are helping ensure that Sahtúot’ı̨nę language, culture, and community knowledge continue to thrive for generations to come.

Grâce à son projet pour la prochaine génération, le gouvernement Got’ı̨nę de Délı̨nę préserve la voix et le savoir des Aînés Sahtúot’ı̨nę grâce à des enregistrements de récits, d’enseignements et d’utilisation de la langue pour les générations futures. Grâce à un apprentissage portant sur le territoire, aux archives numériques et à des outils linguistiques novateurs, ce projet contribue à reconnecter les jeunes à leur culture tout en favorisant la guérison des séquelles durables des pensionnats autochtones.
