Lack of cohesion and organization in a community infrastructure area, of which we suffer, costs us in the form of services. The recent snow clearing fiasco is proof of us not properly serviced. The snowplow tracker is reasonably accurate (with issues), and the pattern of being done last is repetitive.

There was an excellent conversation with a supervisor, and we will wait for snow. There's another supervisor, as well, and It'd be great if we could get a conversation or to know him. If anyone can help with contact? Private Message us.

Do you know how to use the snow plow tracker? You have to go out of the Facebook app and go to a web browser for it to function smoothly (address attached). Bigger screen the better. And you should use it because snow clearing through NWBrook is done last. Lot's of times. And, inadequate (not a reflection of quality). And, the tracker shows us being bypassed multiple times and left to the end. And the patterns don't justify economic sense if it were a private company. It's not efficient.

Thus, it needs to be better laid out so that no community suffers, and we are not at the end of the run, frequently. Changed up a bit. Like most things, there needs to be an online portal that shows the routes - which could alternate, storm by storm - and put our community in an advantageous order; some of the time but not all of the time. First today, last tomorrow lol. But just be fair.

All said, let's give a shout out to the plow operator that came through - twice - in timely fashion, on Christmas Day. I'm sure he wanted to be elsewhere. Tip of hat...

There's still room for moderators. PM.

While we wait for this one to play out - and hopefully put to rest - there was an earlier post that talked about trails. Anyone want to inbox if interested in specific trail stuff. Or, anything else if you don't want to or feel like commenting below. PM. Inbox.
L*D and Rec Committee input welcome. pm.

Thanks,

Thank you to all who've commented so far on the last post, re: snow clearing for North West Brook. Question: For those who have, in the past, contacted the depot what are you being told and what kind of reception are you getting? (Reception meaning in the form of friendly, helpful service).

Government of Newfoundland and Labrador
Hi All
Happy New Year and hope you are well. It’s another disaster for snow clearing through our community! So, today (Monday January 12) said author of this page made a visit to the depot at Goobies. Before we get started, why is the front-line secretary there rude and defensive? I asked to speak with the supervisor and she said he’s not in. I asked who it is, she said today it’s “###.”

She asked me what it’s about. I said snow clearing in North West Brook, and she proceeded to inform me, in a defensive, rude tone, that they only have one plow on; I told her that’s not true. She said the Trans-Canada isn’t done yet, and I told her it was done. I told her the side roads are all done on both sides of South West Arm and she said they are not. I told her they were, I said here, I’ll show you. She blurted out, “Well, I haven’t checked lately!” She stood up and turned away from me and said I’ll have “###” call you.

Folks, I need some support here and we need a group of people to visit the depot and complain, or get someone higher up involved. You are not imagining things to think that your snow clearing is substandard (both timely and quality). The roads through North West Brook and Ivany’s Cove are LAST all the time. Then you get ONE pass and one pass only while the plows are continuously doing double and triple passes all around - South West Arm (both sides), Goobie’s, and Deep Bight. Our road is a complete mess, and not just from a snow clearing perspective. I can show you the plow activity and the mess our roads are in. We need better!

As a foot note, we did get a plow that came through quite late - it was a pickup truck with a straight plow on the front. And, the road remains narrow and a literal mess. We are the only place from Deep Bight to Goobie’s and beyond that got a pickup truck and received one narrow pass. All other areas had a dump truck with plow and wing and received multiple passes and widening. And, long after said pickup was finished through NWB-ICove (and rest assured, it didn’t take long!), multiple plows continued to do the roads around the area (with the dump truck - plow and wing) and passed by us numerous times.

If you are not comfortable weighing in here in the comments, please forward a private message. We can have a meeting and this needs to be resolved. You don’t have to speak, just a simple show of support. I’m visiting the depot again this week, perhaps today, or tomorrow morning at 7am, because “###” is unlikely to call. Does anyone know what time they open or when the manager arrives, or know the phone number to the depot? Please post it or private message this page.

Please share this post and tag some of the relevant departments (I simply don’t know who they are, like Department Of Work Services And Transportion. Your support is needed.

Trust me people, the Snow Tracker does not lie! You are being left for last in every respect! Go take a drive everywhere else from Deep Bight to Goobies and down SW Arm and look around, or follow the plow tracker to see what’s going on.

Is there any interest in starting a petition to rally some road work for our community? Better snow clearing? What about hiking trails? Traffic Speeds? There's a number of followers in this group but there is a minimum criteria required by Facebook for the moderator to see the followers (it's a need-to-know that the followers are from NW Brook and not spam - other communities please see the note on the end, if interested). Therefore, if any and all who follow here could send a wave or make a comment, then the moderator can better interact with everyone. In numbers we can get action. Please speak up with your concerns and ideas. This group is not meant to replace or duplicate the L*D, Recreation Committee, or any other organizations in the community, but just throw some ideas out there to try and make our community better. We live in a great place with so much potential!
(Note: Ivany's Cove, Queen's Cove and any other communities in SW Arm are welcome to participate; if there's interest we can modify the group name.)

Thanks to all who’ve followed the page. Remember, it’s your page - and your community - feel free to weigh in.

Last October the road / culvert washed out at the turn-off to the Marina here in North West Brook. After approximately three days of traffic going through the community (no Detour signs placed at either end) and backtracking because of the road closure, a homemade Detour sign was secured to the speed limit sign at the intersection of Main Road and Route 204 (South West Arm Highway). The sign was promptly removed the next day and no Detour signs were put in place by Government of Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Transportation Goobie’s Depot.

What’s with that? Has anyone ever driven anywhere and had to turn around and drive a mile back because Department of Highways refused to place a Detour sign? That was weird.

The only road maintenance done in this community is when an area washes out completely. Typically, you constantly see the edges of the pavement gouged from rain run-off; large pot holes left in the road - once a year hastily packed with asphalt - only to be torn out when the first snowplow passes over; repairs done that are substandard (huge sink areas after a period of wear in); and work done that is meaningless: a backhoe with a sweeper attachment, for example, sweeping dust of the road, or the annual ritual of “ditching.”

We need a voice to be heard. Do you know that every year there’s an incredible amount of money that goes into South West Arm and the surrounding communities. Spoiler: We are not getting our share! That is easily observed by a trip down and up this arm (it makes for a great Sunday drive, too. There’s a nice, little store in Hodge’s Cove that sells Chicken Flour, you know! 😉 ).

We need to ask for funds and upgrades. We need to get a group together to meet our MHA Parrot, MHA Terra Nova (can’t tag his office as I did in earlier post, not sure what’s going on). I encourage him to join our group and hear our concerns. We should have access to the snow clearing schedule and how it’s carried out and why, on certain occasions, we are left snowbound when most of us are only a minute from the TCH or SWArm Highway and the snow clearing equipment travels up and down SW Arm on 4, 5, and 6 occasions without taking the time to turn into North West Brook and unlock several hundred houses allowing those residents to easily go about their day: medical appointments, grocery shopping, business appointments and the like. You have every right to know how much money is budgeted for this area and how it’s spent. It’s public funds. It’s your funds.

Ideas are welcome. Please weigh in.

Welcome everybody. This page was started due to a perceived lack of fair snow clearing services for our community. It has been observed that snow clearing equipment will plow, widen, and sand/salt the South West Arm highway on four or more passes without going through our community, leaving residents stranded - at times - late into the afternoon.

It is understood that some residents who call are frustrated due to lack of cooperation from reception at the Goobie’s depot. The community has to wait for the SW Arm highway to be plowed and, subsequently, all side roads from the lower end to the top of the Arm are serviced before getting one cut through the community, which also opens SW Arm highway directly to the TCH and is widely used by many residents of SW Arm. There does not seem to be a set protocol for how snow clearing is handled, but many residents who follow the GovNL Snow Plow Tracker have noted that something isn’t right when many other community side roads are cleared while this community’s main and side roads are left uncleared without one single cut.

Not to be perceived as wanting to be first, but simply asking for clarification on the route that the plows take and to ask for change so that our residents are not last on a disproportionate number of occasions when there is a snow storm.

This page is more than about snow clearing: there are other issues as well, namely road infrastructure spending and the state of the roads in the community. But for now let’s concentrate on the issue of snow clearing - one small step at a time.

With whom do we start? Has anyone had any luck discussing this matter with our MHA? What about the depot at Goobie’s? Is there a contact there that will discuss how snow clearing is done (in what order) and is an actual plan on paper that we can see and dispute and ask for change if it’s not perceived as being fair?

Let’s leave it there and have some input to determine next steps.
