A BIG STEP FOR COMMUNITY ANGELS ❤️
Food insecurity is getting worse, and the way charities receive food is changing.
For years, organizations like COMMUNITY ANGELS have relied heavily on donated surplus food from grocery stores and businesses to help feed seniors, families and people who are struggling.
But more and more of that food is now being sold at discounted prices instead of being donated.
That means charities and nonprofit organizations may receive less food at the exact same time that more people are needing help.
We knew we had to start thinking differently.
So today, COMMUNITY ANGELS purchased a freeze dryer.
This machine is going to help us save good food before it is lost and turn it into food that can feed people later.
When farmers, growers, wholesalers, food suppliers, stores, or businesses have extra fruit, vegetables, meals, or other suitable food, we will have another way to preserve it instead of watching it spoil because we cannot distribute it quickly enough.
That is incredibly important.
Fresh food has a very short window.
Sometimes food is available in abundance for only a few days.
Now, instead of having to say, “We can’t take that much,” we can work toward saying:
“Bring it to us. We can save it.”
The freeze dryer will allow us to take suitable food that may only last days and preserve it so it can help feed people weeks or months later.
It will help us:
❤️ Continue to provide nutritious food for the Seniors Program out of Tydel Foods, helping over 800+ seniors per month 
❤️ Reduce food waste
❤️ Preserve fruits and vegetables
❤️ Preserve meals and ingredients
❤️ Build an emergency food reserve
❤️ Prepare for floods, wildfires, severe weather, or food shortages
❤️ Store food for times when donations are low
❤️ Work more directly with farmers, growers, wholesalers, packers, and food producers
❤️ Become less dependent on what is left over at the retail level
This machine is about much more than food preservation.
It is about helping COMMUNITY ANGELS Food and Housing Support Society stay in a position where we can continue providing food for people who are struggling, even as the economy becomes more difficult and traditional food donations become less reliable.
But purchasing the machine is only the first step.
We still need help.
There are ongoing costs for Mylar bags, oxygen absorbers, packaging materials, food-safe containers, storage supplies, preparation equipment, replacement supplies, electricity, maintenance and all of the other things required to run this program properly.
We also want to build relationships with farmers, growers, wholesalers, distributors, food packers and businesses who may have good food available that would otherwise be lost.
So we are asking our community to come forward.
If you can make a donation, sponsor supplies, connect us with a farmer or food supplier, or help us build this program, it will make a real difference.
Every donation will help us take this machine from being a piece of equipment to becoming a tool that can help feed people for years to come.
This is about preparing now.
It is about saving food when it is available.
It is about building a reserve for the hard times.
And most importantly, it is about continuing to make sure seniors, families and vulnerable people in our community have food when they need it.
Save it. Preserve it. Store it. Feed people with it.
