Every 6 days in Canada, a woman is killed by her intimate partner. Yet the silent epidemic of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) caused by intimate partner violence (IPV) remains almost invisible to the public.

At a recent conference, frontline advocates, medical experts, and legal professionals highlighted exactly how deeply systemic gaps fail survivors, realities our team witnesses firsthand.

From the unseen, life-threatening neurological damage of strangulation to a criminal justice system that often weaponizes the clinical symptoms of a TBI (like memory gaps) to deem survivors “unreliable,” the barriers to safety and justice are massive.

With police responding to over 38 000 provincial IPV incidents a year, we must completely dismantle the victim-blaming narrative. Stop asking survivors “why didn’t you just leave?” and start asking what systemic and community barriers we can collectively remove to help them escape safely.

IPV is an epidemic. Change starts by refusing to default to disbelief, and ensuring survivors have immediate access to safe, trauma-informed support. You are not alone, and we are here to help. 💓

June is National Safety Month, and at Chatham-Kent Victim Services, we believe that everyone deserves to feel secure in their home, workplace, and community. 💛

Safety isn’t just about preventing accidents. it’s about building a supportive, informed network where people look out for one another and know where to turn when crisis strikes. Throughout this month, we are emphasizing the power of awareness, connection, and community care.

If you or someone you know has experienced a crime or tragic event, please remember that you do not have to navigate the aftermath alone. Our team is here to provide compassionate, confidential support, resources, and a safe space to heal.

Let's work together to create a safer, more resilient community for everyone.

Chatham-Kent Victim Services would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Lisa Persyn and Nick Persyn , coordinators of the Wallaceburg Shootout 4-on-4 Charity Basketball Tournament.

Thanks to their hard work and the generosity of the community at W.D.S.S., the all-day event, complete with a tournament, 3-point competition, and fundraising lunch, raised $2570.00 in support of our crisis services. 🩷

These funds allow us to continue providing vital, immediate support to individuals navigating trauma in our community. Thank you to everyone involved for making a difference!

June is Indigenous History Month. 🧡

This month is a dedicated time to honour the history, resilience, and rich cultures of Indigenous communities. But it’s also a reminder of our ongoing responsibility to listen, learn, and uplift Indigenous voices, not just this month, but every single day.

At Chatham-Kent Victim Services, we are committed to continuous learning, building meaningful relationships, and fostering an inclusive community.

A huge congratulations to our incredible new cohort of volunteers who officially completed their training this past weekend! 🎓

Welcoming a new group into the family is always such a special milestone. Over the weekend, these dedicated individuals showed up with open hearts, ready to learn, listen, and equip themselves with the tools needed to support our community through some of their toughest moments.

Becoming a crisis responder takes immense empathy, resilience, and a true commitment to making a difference. We are so incredibly proud of the dedication they’ve already shown, and we cannot wait to see the profound impact they will make as they step into their roles.

To our newest volunteers: thank you for choosing to show up for others. Your journey starts now, and we are with you every single step of the way. 🩵

Today is National Missing Children’s Day. In honour of this day, Chatham-Kent Victim Services is highlighting Project Lifesaver, a vital program designed to protect vulnerable individuals at risk of wandering or going missing.

A joint initiative with the Chatham-Kent Police Service, Project Lifesaver provides individuals with a lightweight wristband that emits a 24/7 tracking signal. This allows police officers to locate participants quickly and safely if they go missing, reducing search times from hours to minutes.

This program offers crucial peace of mind to families navigating conditions like Autism, Dementia, or brain injuries.

To learn more or register a loved one, contact Chatham-Kent Victim Services at [email protected] or 519-436-6630.
