Compassion and love are two of the most beautiful qualities we can nurture—one helps us respond to suffering with kindness, and the other opens our hearts to joy and connection. They go hand in hand, supporting our personal well-being and deepening our care for others.

In this Happy Course, we’ll explore how both qualities can be trained through building awareness of our current biases, our shared humanity, and our interdependence. Together, we’ll uncover how the power of compassion can bring more strength, care, and meaning into our daily lives.

Classes are on Wednesday evenings at Colonel Gray High School, from 6–8pm, beginning May 7th and ending on May 28th.

How often do we get stuck in negativity bias - focusing on others' faults and blaming others for our suffering? How often do we observe and appreciate others’ kindness?

Based on ancient wisdom, this course offers participants practical tools to view ourselves and others from a positive perspective. A positive outlook is a good foundation for building creativity, compassion, happiness and productivity.

This course explores the important role our bodies play in our own happiness and well-being. In everyday life, our bodies sometimes react to danger when there is no real threat, or hold on to a sense of danger after a threat has passed. This can lead to stress, anxiety and the inability to concentrate, which in turn compromise our physical health.

Participants have the opportunity to develop resilience skills and stress reduction techniques along with practices of mindfulness and emotional regulation.

Happy Courses provide participants of all ages with opportunities for gaining personal insight along with practical tools based on science-based research, ancient wisdom and common sense. Participants get to meet and learn with like-minded people. Class format includes meditations, presentations as well as group discussions.

This is an in-person event with no online option.

This module draws upon work from authors Marshall Rosenberg and Oren J. Sofer who are specialists in “Non-violent Communication”. Compassionate Communication uses their techniques to build a basis for improving our relationships between people and within society. In this module, participants will learn (through interactive practice), techniques to help communicate more effectively within our daily life experiences.

Based on this knowledge, participants can learn to honestly express themselves without judgement and listen to others with empathy. Practicing compassionate communication skills will help to enrich your life both at home and work.
