Creation is a process of testing what holds.

As we build repertoire for HURRICANE, experimentation is part of the work: shifting weight, changing timing, following an impulse far enough to see where it leads.
Some ideas stay. Others open the door to something we hadn’t planned.

SQx spent a couple of days in Gothenburg at the Gothenburg Dance and Theatre Festival, taking in performances, conversations and new perspectives from across the international performing arts community.

We joined The Soft Power of Culture, a conference on the role of the performing arts in democracy, artistic freedom, and the challenges of programming in an increasingly polarised world. It was valuable to hear perspectives from artists, researchers and cultural leaders including Dritëro Kasapi (Riksteatern), Kristin Danielsen (Nordic Culture Fund), and Lotta Lekvall (Folkteatern Göteborg / Scensverige).

Among the works we experienced were Gola, by Oriol Pla & Pau Matas, and The Loopers, by Aloun Marchal.

Beyond the programme, we were glad to connect with fellow artists and presenters, including Toby Kassell of No Deadline and Martin Hansson of Stora Teatern

We leave Gothenburg with new artistic references, conversations, connections and ideas for future collaborations. 🇸🇪

SQx is wrapping up our residency in Santa Maria, Portugal, where we’ve been continuing the creation of HURRICANE.

Movement is only one piece of the puzzle. The work takes shape through the relationship between bodies, sound, images, lighting, timing, and the many decisions that happen around the dancing itself.

This reel offers a glimpse into that process, featuring original composition by Miles Jones and Joshua Sadlier-Brown.

We’re leaving the island with plenty to discover.

SQx Dance Company is based in the Slocan Valley, in rural British Columbia📍

We work from Area I of the Regional District of Central Kootenay, on the unceded traditional territories of the Sinixt, Syilx, and Ktunaxa peoples; about eight hours from Vancouver.

Led by choreographer Carmen Moreira, SQx develops interdisciplinary contemporary dance works shaped by ecology, technology, cultural memory, resilience, and the experience of working across rural, remote, and international contexts.

Our location isn’t simply where the work happens. It is part of how the work is made: rooted in place, responsive to community, and connected to artists and audiences far beyond the region.

At the centre of the work are 500 pounds of sustainably sourced, fully recyclable paper sculptures designed by Vancouver’s molo

The dancers continually reshape them—building, collapsing, resisting, and reorganizing a landscape that never stays fixed.

Inspired by the landscapes of where is colonially known as British Columbia, TIDAL WAVE features an original score by Miles Jones

Touring begins long before a company arrives onstage. It starts with listening, learning how cultural work is supported in each place, and building relationships carefully. One island, one conversation, and one possible future performance at a time!

We made a short but important trip through the Azores, with stops on São Jorge, Flores, and Corvo. The purpose was practical: to introduce SQx’s work, visit cultural spaces, and meet with local presenters and municipal partners about future performance possibilities in Portugal.

The feed loves a jump.

Choreography asks what holds it up?

Contemporary dance online often gets reduced to impact: height, speed, the sharpest second. But TIDAL WAVE resists the highlight reel.

This work is about pressure.

What builds. What breaks. What keeps moving through the body after the image is gone.

At SQx, artistic rigor means movement has to do more than look good in a frame. It has to carry structure, tension, and consequence.

So yes, this moment flies.
But the piece lives in the lead-up, the force, and the landing.

We’re back on the road with our Community Tours program!

SQx is travelling to schools and community spaces, bringing contemporary dance directly into rural communities through performances, workshops, and conversation.

This program is about access, relationship-building, and showing up. Creating space for meaningful exchange outside traditional theatre settings.

We’re grateful to the communities hosting us and excited for another season of movement, learning, and connection.
