"It has nothing to do with how smart or tough we think we are—when we trust someone, we believe that they’ll never hurt us, and if they hurt us, we believe that it can’t possibly happen again."

Survivors often feel trapped and powerless in abusive relationships. One woman reaches out for help to find safety for herself and her child.

This Pride Month, we’re taking time to reflect on what it means to truly show up for 2SLGBTQIA+ people in our communities—with love, respect, and belonging at the centre of that commitment.

Pride is both celebration and reflection. It is a reminder of the importance of safety, dignity, and inclusion, and of the ongoing work needed to ensure that everyone can live openly and authentically, without fear or harm.

For us at Lanark County Interval House & Community Support, this means continuing to listen, learn, and strengthen the ways we support 2SLGBTQIA+ survivors and community members. It means recognizing that belonging is not automatic—it is something we actively build together through care, accountability, and action.

Love. Respect. Belonging.
This is Pride.

Newfoundland and Labrador has officially declared gender-based violence an epidemic, joining Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in recognizing the urgency of this crisis.

BC must follow.

Gender-based violence (GBV) is a serious social, economic, safety and public health crisis that costs BC an estimated $1.12 billion every year. Declaring GBV an epidemic is a critical step in recognizing its severity and coordinating efforts to address its root causes through increased accountability, stronger prevention efforts and improved supports for survivors.

YWCA BC continues to call on the provincial government to take meaningful action.

This week, Newfoundland and Labrador officially declared gender-based violence an epidemic and announced the establishment of a task force, becoming the latest province to take this step following similar declarations in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

"After validating someone’s experience, you can refer them to resources to help them better understand the cycle of abuse and to show them there’s a safe way out."

Validating a friend or loved one after they disclose abuse to you can make all the difference. Things to say to help them realize it's not their fault.
