The Charitable Education Initiative Uganda (CHEIN): Secondary School Essay Competition 2014
The CHEIN is a non-profit organization that provides financial assistance to promising talent in Uganda through annual bursaries towards the beneficiaries' academic expenditure. These bursaries are contested for through annual competitions in writing, public speech and science.
We believe that if we get Ugandan youth thinking more deeply about our republic today, we just might have a better Uganda tomorrow.
**What's the 2014 prize?**: 4 cash scholarships towards one school term's fees for up to 4 winners at the secondary school level
**What's the deadline?**: 30th November 2014
**What do you have to do?**: Write an essay of at least 2,000 words on any the topics below. Send your essay through either as a Facebook message to The Charitable Education Initiative Uganda's page, or to [email protected]
The best essay for each topic wins a term's fees. Multiple entries are encouraged, and may result in multiple awards to a single writer.
*Topic 1*
"Theme: A President in Focus": Consider the pros, and the cons, of President Yoweri Museveni's continued leadership, towards and past 2016. Additionally, analyze the risks created, as well as the risks negated, by this political reality
*Topic 2*
"Theme: Homosexuality in Uganda": Construct a case for, as well as a counter case against, an anti-homosexuality bill in Uganda. Weighing these two cases against each other, draw a conclusion as to the republic's most beneficial stance
*Topic 3*
"Theme: The Ugandan Girl Today, the Ugandan Woman Tomorrow": Provide examples of structures (institutional policies, modi operandi, cultural traditions, etc.) within the republic's economic, social, and political mechanisms, which structures directly or indirectly discriminate against young women, limit the crystallization of their potential, or degrade their present worth. Describe the long-term effect of these structures on women, families, communities, and the country, if they go uncorrected
*Topic 4*
"Theme: An Exercise in the Application of Perspective": Uganda faces several problems today, and within its society exist several structural deficiencies. Corruption within government organs, declining standards of education, and an acute shortage of healthcare services are but a few examples. In addition to the aforementioned, propose other challenges and structural deficiencies faced by the republic today, and rank these in order of their significance.
