Berwick Girl Guides, for likely close to 30 years, have been the “Country Mice” to friends, the “City Mice” at Fort Massey United Church, in Halifax. Every year-ish or so, we’ve slept between pianos on the choir room floor, played late in the cathedral-ceilinged gym, tested our city street parking skills, ordered pizza - delivery!, and have even cooked a full turkey dinner in the kitchen. Fort Massey has been our home away from home for city adventures: all things Nocturne, ferry rides, sock monkey crafting, Citadel Hill tours, wood-fired s’mores at the OG Morris East, market breakfast mornings, wall climbing…. One of our youth members grew up to become Fort Massey’s organist.
Fort Massey closes its physical space June 7. We have treasured our time in such a heritage building in Halifax, made fantastic memories and we’ve treasured the relationship with the people who welcomed us year after year.
One door closes: we hope many more open for our Fort Massey friends in the days and decades ahead. Thank you for hosting us.

At our Berwick Guiding Spring tea June 3, a special friend from the Kinette Club of Kentville & District, Emilie Desveaux Starratt ; dropped in. The Kinettes have been great Guiding friends over many years, and made a wonderful donation to our program and projects. This will particularly help Pathfinder Ellie’s Canada Cord project: a propane fire pit for use at camp.
We love the community connections Guiding offers an excuse for us to develop with our youth and volunteers: a real demonstration of how we all make things happen together! Thanks, Kinettes!

Our cake tea-for-two-projects this evening was fantastic! Project one, Pathfinder Ellie’s Canada Cord propane fire bowl goal, for use at Hardwood Lake Camp through the freewill offering admission; was generously supported. Project two, our third-year Guides’ Lady Baden Powell Award invitation to guests to add supplies for a Chrysalis House Association art and journaling therapy project, saw several boxes filled. The rest of us sliced, poured, washed up, reset tables - and visited! Thank you to our units’ youth for all their contributions, to families for their support of our efforts and to our community friends, who always turn out 💙

Berwick Girl Guides would love to see family and friends at their June 3 evening tea, at the South Berwick Community Hall. We've got senior youth tackling their community service challenges, and the rest of us will be supporting crew and smiling hosts 🙂

Berwick Pathfinder volunteer Guider Tracey Rogers, right, was once one of Cambridge Girl Guides volunteer Guider Judy Parks’ unit members. They figure, oh, 1979 into the first of the ‘80s…. Tracey had the pleasure of serving Judy, as the Pathfinders were part of the Berwick Guiding team helping at the Berwick & District Lions Club’s May 27 seniors appreciation dinner.

What’s 192 people for supper? An honour! Berwick & District Lions Club members did the heavy lifting this evening on a community seniors’ appreciation dinner, and our Guides and Pathfinders were asked to serve. We had a great time on the line, at table-side, meeting tonnes of people we knew; and hearing that guests appreciated seeing our team work so efficiently - and smiling! Berwick Guiding was very pleased to have been involved.
