Dear WHCA Facility Users,

The City has asked all facilities to reduce water usage until the water restrictions have been lifted. WHCA has enacted our water reduction plan, while maintaining the activities and services our members and patrons expect.

To support this effort, the following measures will be in place for the duration of the restrictions:

No outdoor water usage, including outdoor rink flooding.

Reduced arena flooding, where it is safe to do so, primarily during light-use times and minor activities.

Reduced shower usage in arena and fitness centre dressing rooms — short, quick showers are appreciated.

By implementing these measures, we can help conserve water while repairs are completed on the broken water main. We sincerely thank you for your patience, understanding, and cooperation during this time.

Ugh, the "Great Calgary Shovel" season is officially back. And if your pup is doing this little "ouchy dance" on walking duty (see photo!), you know what else is back: heavy-handed sidewalk salting.

We all want safe sidewalks, but that chunky rock salt burns paws instantly and wreaks havoc on our gardens. Plus, when it melts, all that chloride washes straight down our storm drains and into the Bow River. Not great for the trout.

Let’s try a lower-sodium approach this winter, West Hillhurst:

Shovel early: Get the snow while it's fluffy before it gets packed into ice. Consider it your free winter workout.

Grit over Melt: You usually need traction, not a total melt. Try using sand or "pickle mix" (sand with a tiny bit of salt) instead of coating the pavement in white rocks.

Let’s keep the salt for the rim of our margarita glasses, yeah?

The garden is finally tucked in for the winter, and I’m trading my trowel for a warm mug of tea.

Looking out at the frost (and dreaming of next year's tomatoes), it’s a good reminder that the snow packing up in the mountains right now is the water we’ll be using next spring. Our Eastern Slopes act as a giant water tower for the whole city, and keeping them clean is crucial for our future harvests.

That’s why I’m taking a quiet moment to look at the Save Our Slopes initiative. They’re working to keep the coal mining ban in place to protect those headwaters.

If you’re curled up on the couch scrolling today, consider taking 30 seconds to peek at their petition at saveourslopes.ca. It’s a small digital action that protects our big backyard.

🐞 Why is Calgary Crawling with Ladybugs? 🐞

If your garden has turned into a ladybug convention, you're not alone! Here's the scoop on our spotted visitors:

🌱 The Guest Star: Meet the Seven-Spotted Lady Beetle! This invasive species from Europe is having a population boom, thanks to thriving conditions here.

🍽️ The Buffet: Our wet spring followed by a hot summer created an aphid bonanza – the ultimate feast for ladybugs! More food means more ladybugs.

So, while they're fantastic, free pest control for our plants, they also outcompete our native ladybug species. Enjoy their aphid-munching work!

After a refreshing summer break, we're excited to announce that the West Hillhurst Green Community is firing up our initiatives again, and we're looking for passionate new members to join our team!

Are you passionate about a greener West Hillhurst? Do you love the idea of enhancing our local green spaces, supporting pollinators, and fostering a more connected, sustainable neighbourhood? If so, we want to hear from you!

We're a local group dedicated to making a positive impact right here in West Hillhurst – from tree planting and native plant gardening to expanding green spaces. No experience necessary, just enthusiasm!

Hello West Hillhurst community! Get ready for a delicious way to support a great cause. Our annual Apple Fundraiser for the Preschool is now open and accepting orders!

We've partnered with Davison's Orchards in Vernon, B.C., to bring you fresh, delicious apples. All you have to do is place your order online by September 10 at midnight.

Pickup will be at the WHCA parking lot off of 19th Street at the end of September. The exact pickup date and your assigned time slot will be emailed to you after you place your order.
