Medicine River Watershed Society

Medicine River Watershed Society The MRWS society is a non-profit community based group that advocates for the health and sustainability of the Medicine River watershed and its subsidiaries.

The Medicine River spans about 80 km from Medicine Lake to its confluence into the Red Deer River just east of Dickson Dam (Gleniffer Lake). The Medicine River and its tributaries traverse across parts of Clearwater, Ponoka, Lacombe, and Red Deer counties. The watershed is fed entirely from springs and surface runoff, so the water quality and flows vary considerably from mountain stream- fed rivers. The Medicine River sub-watershed is one of fifteen sub-watersheds within the Red Deer River Watershed, which covers an area of nearly 50,000 square kilometers across central Alberta.

Cancelled- Sept 20 2026 Plein Air Painting Event
Due to a low number of registrants, the Medicine River Watershed Society has decided to cancel this year's Plein Air Painting event that was scheduled for Sept 20, 2026.

We do truly appreciate interest in participating in the event and love that artists come and spend their day with us. By capturing their vision of the river and surrounding lands in their paintings they inspire those in our communities who depend on the river and its aquifer to recognize the rivers' importance and to continue to advocate for its sustainability.

We do hope to offer this event again next year.

MRWS River Monitoring has begun! Thank you to John Fletcher and Janina Carlstad for taking on this important work for our society. Monthly monitoring of levels, temperature, dissolved oxygen content is one way for us to collect data that helps us to monitor and advocate for the river and our water supply.
